I agree, well said James, I could not have put it better if I tried.

You have the whole story in a nutshell.

We all come from varied backgrounds and cultures, with differing work and leisure situations. There must me some flexibility in what we choose to wear.

Pleasing others also comes into the equation. I'm aware that I may embarrass my teenage daughter by being kilted sometimes.

When we walk as a family in the street, she is always a few yards in front or behind.

Last night I attended the annual school concert, she seems a little embarrased by me around her friends and peers, she's a teenager!

Even my wife this morning said that she wishes I would wear trousers more often, I said 'I hate trousers', she said 'Oh well then' and accepts my choice even if she disagrees with it.

I will wear shorts on some jobs (ladders etc) for the reasons Elijah expressed.
But they don't inspire the passion and joy that kilts do, not even close!

Grahm having raised and am raising "several" children, I understand the teen situation. What the teens don't realize is that by trying to distance themselves by walking ahead or behind, they cause more attention to themselves in relation to you and people will not have respect for her if they relize she is showing shame for her father. If she would just walk right up close beside you the public perception of her and you would be favorable. Have her try it and see. She needs to get a grip as hard as it is for a teen girl.

When my daughter tries to distance herself from me I work at trying to embarass her by calling more attention. She gets the idea and rejoins the family

If your daughters friends are friends indeed, she would do better by introducing them to you and showing respect. They will see that if she is ok with your kilt they will think "Your Dad's Cool"

I'll second that. I just hope that wearing a kilt never becomes mundane!

Like Mychael, I can expect every response except D.

The problem with option "B" is that it could put me in a bad mood for the night. If the car stops, then that could lead to other problems. But hopefully, I will never find out.
