On my last trip to the Grandfather Mountain games I saw so many non traditional kilts that I finally started to count them. I a little over two hours there were 20+ UK's, a few AK's, and a dozen or more from makers I didn't recognize. And yes, there were a few made from mamma's old curtains, and a couple off-the-rack sort of tartan skirts. As far as I could see no one paid any attention whatsoever. Even back in the early 70's when I was competing in athletics my home made 'kilt' didn't garner a single comment, or even second glance.

When I showed up to my first Highland Festival/Games I was not yet kilted but I left there in a UK Survival. There were a number of guys in UK's, lots in tartan kilts of varying quality and design and a number of men in trousers. I don't think you'd get any grief from anyone about wearing anything. Except maybe the guy who had his kilt on backwards - something I don't understand since if you take the effort to buy a kilt, surely you know how it goes on...?

Anyway, I'm no expert, just a beginner, but I'd be comfortable in either my traditional or my UK.

Just wanted to add my .02 cents worth ....

Wear what you want, you will fit in wearing a modern UK as much as you would wearing a tartan kilt of any manufacture or ilk.

I personally would not even hesitate to wear my tartan traditional to the games regardless of weather, etc., and would do so over my UK based on the fact that the festival is specifically celebrating my heritage, and would want to show off my traditional tartan tank!

However, I would not hesitate to wear my UK either if that was all I had.

    Think I'm gonna do both.

Headed over to the Las Vegas Highland Games tomorrow and think I'm gonna wear my Kathy's Kilts Macdonald Lord of the Isles tartan tank on Saturday then my Utilikilts Brown Leather on Sunday.

I may be the Lone Ranger though, haven't heard if anyone else on the board is going.
