Most of my kilt wearing is done in reenactment/rendezvous settings or in relation to piping. Folks at those events tend to be more used to seeing the kilt, so I haven't heard the question that frequently. It still does come up, generally from visitors to the event. My usual answer is "It depends upon the company, the occasion, and the weather. But not necessarily in that order." That generally closes the subject. Anyone who persists (especially women), I refer to my wife, explaining that she's the only one "authorized" to make the inspection.
All skill and effort is to no avail when an angel pees down your drones.

I was asked "the question" again this weekend. After finishing a transaction with a customer, (I work in a leather shop at a local Rennfaire) one of the ladies in the group asked me discreetly, "So, what do Scotsmen wear under the kilt?".
"My Lady!", I answered loudly in character, "A lady shouldn't ask, a gentleman won't answer, and a wench would already know!" That seemed to suffice.

LOL! I will have to remember that for the Ren Faire next year, although all of the terms are common language, so it might be appropriate any time!
