The posts on riding bareback, and or with blankets jogged my memory. Here's what came up- bareback pads.It seems like they would be better than a blanket or regular saddle.

Wow! I've used a bareback saddle much like that sheepskin one. That was years ago when I used to go riding with a co-worker every Saturday afternoon.

We got good enough to attempt a ride bareback and I remember us going full-gallop on a trail through the woods.

To ride like that you have to grip the horse's sides with your legs. I could feel my mare's every breath, and her muscles rippling as she ran. I could tell she loved being free from the weight and stiffness of the big leather saddle.

Usually, I'd be riding her, in the sense of being in command of her every movement. That day though, she was running free and I was literally just along for the ride.

    What a thrill!

Thanks for bringing back that memory.

Looking at that white sheepskin one I'm reminded of a remark from American Chopper when the reenacter made Pauly drop his boxers. "Look at the skid mark on THAT!"

well Irode a "clyde" a very fine "Budweiser Reject" by the name of cody I rode kilted, and bare back(although that could mean the same thing huh?) ....no need for a saddle as they are wide enough that falling off is kind hard to do!
I didnt get pics this time ....next time though......watch out

I considered buying a Clyde a while back. I liked the idea of intimidating volkswagons. The average cost of 3 to 5 thousand for a horse trained to ride wasn't too bad, but I ran across some figures that a lactating female will eat 20 qts. of feed and 50 lbs. of hay a day. A gelding would probably be less, but then I have to consider the cost of adding 12 ft. to the barn for hay storage, a taller trailer, and I don't think the farrier will let me get away with the old prices. It's cheaper to buy kilts. I settled on a Tennessee Walker.
