I like Henri's Notions version of it. Good band, look them up.
Remember when one of the beer companies used all of the old classic rock songs in their commercials? I always wondered how many kids turned on a radio, heard the song and said "Hey, that's the song from the beer commercial! Now it's on the radio! Cool!"

Anytime an older song is covered by someone else, there are always many who don't know it's a cover and assume the new artist is the original.
Just as a big for instance, when Whitney Houston did "I Will Always Love You," many folks just assumed that she was the original artist. Sorry, but Dolly Parton wrote it many years before, and performed it as well. Granted, Houston did a lot to popularize the song, but she wasn't the original.
I believe that if a song is truly exceptional, it can be done in any genre. There are some good metal songs that only work as metal, some country songs that only work as country, etc. But then there are some songs that are just great songs.

If you think the folks that think that Metallica wrote Whiskey in the Jar is bad, you should have heard the argument I had with someone about their cover of "Mama Tried." I eventually had to drag them to my sister's house and show them the old Merle Haggard vinyl.
I think Metallica should have stuck with their own stuff. I hate pretty much all of their covers.
As far as the song "Whiskey in the Jar" goes, I prefer the Clancy Brothers.

You mean "Mama Said"? Metallica, to my knowledge, has never recorded a song called "Mama Tried" and their song "Mama Said" is completely different than "Mama Tried". The Grateful Dead covered "Mama Tried" though.

Maybe it was another band I was thinking of. But given the fact that Metallica just should not do covers, I think I'm somewhat justified. Then again, I really haven't been too thrilled with anything Metallica has done since "...And Justice For All." I can stand the black album, but almost anything after that makes my skin crawl. As much of a Celtic music fan as I am, however, it wasn't "Whiskey" that put them forever beyond my forgiveness, it was their abuse of a Misfits song.

After reading through this thread I had to check out Beatallica. On their Myspace site they had a friend called Harptallica.
