I wish I could be as gracious as Alan, he is a true gentleman. If this were I, I would be furious and insulted....

What did happen was enthusiasm for one aspect of kilting celebration was stopped. I feel that Alan H was unfairly singled out....
Alan, I feel that you were unfairly admonished for making this a better forum by your hard work, you were not shown the respect that all forum members try to show each other....

Out of respect to you Alan I am going to go ahead with this making this kilt and it is not going to stop me from purchasing from our professional kiltmakers.

I think we are all making too much of this. If Alan writes up his process, I may make another skirt. Sorry, Alan, I do love the one you made for me, but I need a slightly longer one! Everyone in our Scottish Country dance class is getting distracted ! When I make it, I will post pictures (have a reputation to protect). Meanwhile-those who want the directions-PM Alan. Those who want to "protect" him-ask him if he needs it first. Everyone else...Chill!

As one of the sponsors of this site I would like to thank Alan for his wonderful X Kilt manual. I would also like to see him publish a Mini X Kilt manual. And perhaps get some money for it.

Alan's X Kilt manual has never, as far as I know, taken any business from me. Heck, I invited him to come to Kilt Kamp as an instructor and help others in person.

It has always been my advice to someone wishing to make their own kilt, "Jump on in, the water's fine." and "Go get some fabric, make lots of mistakes, and exercise your brain with a truly rewarding pastime."

The DIY section is a wonderful resource for people with a problem to ask and seek advice from others. Personally, I think if everyone tried to make their own kilt I'd have so much business from those who finally appreciate the work that goes into a kilt that I'd have to send some of them to Rocky and he'd come kill me because of the overload.

So bottom line, Alan, publish your manual. I'll buy one.

This is coming in kind of sideways, but I think Alan H hit the nail on the head when he emphasized that after making (or trying to make) a kilt, you'll appreciate our quality kilt makers all the more. I ripped down a SWK economy Irish National and hand sewed it into something which, if you squinted, and you were far enough, could pass as a kilt. I did it by hand, and it's kinda sorta a box pleated four yarder. It was a lot of fun to do, and I'm sure that my next attempts will turn out better. With that said, I realized that good folks like Rocky and Kelly, and Matt Newsome, and the unknown seamstresses who made my denim eight yarder (from KiltStore.net) really know what they're doing.

I'm going to make more kilts----but I'm going to buy more kilts than I make, and the bought will outclass the built.

Well said Kid. Same goes for me. I'll make a kilt or two because I want to try it and if it turns out half as good as my USAK, I'll be proud to say I made it myself. I'm sure it'll take me dozens and dozens of hours to finish and I'll probably hate my sewing machine when it's all said and done. However, I'll have a kilt that I made and I'll be proud to wear it. When someone asks me where I got my kilt and I say that I made it myself, I'll likely hand them one of Rocky's business cards (because I only have USAK's at this point) and tell them they'd not appreciate the thousands of dollars I'd charge them for half the product if I made them one.

Doing something as a challenge or just to try is much different than making money at it.

I run a machine shop and if you've flown in this country, you've probably had parts on your plane that we made and I may well have handled. That being said, I can make about every part I'd ever need for my race bike, or most anything for that matter, but it is not worth my time when I can buy it for a few hundred dollars.

I'm on the phone with the local veterinarian I'll have him show up and confirm that this horse is now dead.
