A fine looking kilt and the hose are a good match for it too. Reminds me a bit of Buchanan tartan - only nicer. Good health to wear it.

I know this store very well. My wife worked there in the early/mid 90's when she was doing a work-abroad program (and before we met). We went to Scotland in 2003 and went back to the store when we were in Edinburgh. Two Pakistani Brothers own and run the woolen mill. My wife knew one really well since he was her daily "boss". His brother only came in occasionally. Now here's where I am going with this: we walk into the woolen mill store on 179 high street. It's the brother watching the store. He turns around, having not seen or heard from my wife in over 10 years, and cries out "Caroline! How good to see you!" He then proceeds to treat us both like royalty, gives me a great deal on a isle of Aran sweater "because you are Caroline's husband" and we have a great time catching up.

NOW, that is a sign of an EXCELLENT business-person as well as fantastic customer service. I could not believe he remembered her over 10 years later and was so kind and generous. Of course, I am forgetting that my wife is HOT ....so perhaps that played a wee role in his ability to remember her face...but to remember her name and everything else....well, that just blew my mind.

All of this is to say, I can recommend the woolen mill heartily....but i am admittedly a bit biased.

Now that you have worn it how do you feel about the kilt? It looks pretty good for an off the rack.

I feel completely happy and content with it Chef.

Naturally it would be unfair to compare it with a made to measure one but it knocks the spots off the (admittedly few) off the rack kilts that I have and has all the feel and comfort of wool as you would expect. I have tracked down some flashes for it - the ones in the picture were the closest match (Cornish National).

I would say that you can't go wrong for the money and it's a Scottish/UK garment that can be worn with pride and hold its own against more expensive kilts.

Yes my diced hose from Hawick is a good match for quite a few of my kilts Phil, thanks for the compliment.

OK, it looks nice, but the choices of tartan are pretty limited.

Unfortunately, I personally need to have some affinity to the Clan whose tartan I am wearing. I wouldn't just wear a tartan even if I did like it.

Just me, but I am funny that way.

Of course, that limits me to Forbes, Gordon, Campbell, and (or) Royal Stewart.

The choice of off the peg tartans is limited Your Grace, but they have a wide choice for made to measure ones.

Nobody is forced to wear tartans they don't feel an affinity with but even if you feel limited with your Clan tartan choices maybe you can consider non-Clan ones, of which there is a wide choice.

As the tartan of my kilt is disowned as a MacMillan in any case then maybe you can enjoy it as it is and not feel guilty.

Fashion tartans? I sense that the Isle of Sky is calling your name. or perhaps I'm projecting!

For those who might be interested I just received a kilt from the Woollen Mill in the IoS. I posted the review HERE.
