I've seen some paintings of men in kilts with hose that I would not be willing to wear because they were so colorful. It's all a matter of good taste, that may be the real challenge. I'm with Matt, just because someone is from Scotland does not make them an expert. For that matter, just because they think they know, doesn't mean they really do.

Maybe the part about pipe bands is true; however, I have never worn white (or oatmeal) for formal attire or any Highland attire. I have a pair of oatmeal hose, but I've never worn them even once. I think you might find a lot of trads who "have a pair" but have never worn them. What you say about colored hose is true; either match or contrast.

Since this thread has kind of gotten off on the topic of colored hose in general, I would say that a lot of people like red. I like red hose, but IMHO, they should only be worn if you have something else red; e.g., a red stripe in the kilt, a red tassel on your Balmoral, etc. Others would disagree and say that red hose are great regardless. If you don't have something else red, even something small, the eyes of all will simply be drawn to your legs (unless that's what you want).

Those are called argyle hose. Some say they are the only appropriate hose for kilted formal wear.
