Jamie,I have been telling myself and any one else that cares to listen, about things improving with age. Sadly, in my case, reality is just dawning upon me!

So I will need several fist size stones, a cement mixer, and a cat-o'-nine-tails for this shaping of the bonnet...
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

OFFENDED ???? You have to do better than that. After all, I wear a SKIRT, carry a PURSE, Wear my hair in a PONY TAIL, & cover it with a TAM.

    BTW, I considered the SOURCE

All right, I'm glad we have all this out in the open now. Ehh, don't forget the hose and garters, Puffer...

I think I should own at least one Balmoral or a bonnet on that order, so figuring out which one I want is the next task.
Thank you to all for this information and the discussion; it should help a good deal, and has cleared up several things I didn't understand.

On the other subject, I sanded a little more on the walking stick and it's smoothing up nicely. A little history... I found this handle in my back yard behind a row of citrus trees. I moved here about ten years ago, and this stick has been sitting out in the weather that whole time. Although, it pretty much looked exactly like it does now with the cracking and so on when I found it. I did cut the tapered end square because it had been broken. Did the same on the end that would have held the tool head that was on there; the hollow part of that was cracked on it's side.

Can't say how old it is for sure, but I know it is over ten years old and has ben subjected to the weather the whole time; it's also very hard and has a nice tone to it... I think that qualifies it as a stick.

I do have a few more questions about the Balmoral and it's parts, but I will ask them in a new thread.
    Thanks.

Might as well ask the rest of the questions. I'm looking over the Balmorals at the Scottish Tartans Museum.
What is the necessity of having a rosette on a Balmoral? I'm asking because all of them seem to have a black rosette.
    Also, at this link:
The Scottish Tartans Museum's Highland Bonnets & Caps,
there are "woolen tams" in the "HISTORIC STYLES" section near the end of the page. It is the first bonnet in that section and priced at $24. There happens to be a sky blue color offered, as well.
Any thoughts on that particular bonnet?

    Thanks.

In Scotland it is traditional for a Balmoral to have a black rosette. I suspect this is left over from 19C military form but, regardless, that's what is worn today -- when a Balmoral is worn. It is also traditional that it be in a dark blue with a red toorie. A few other colour are worn, of course.

Having said that, I like the Fergusson Britt ones on the STM site despite the fact that none have a rosette, none are in the traditional dark blue and none have a red toorie.

No matter. I am about to order the one of the far right (I see this as brown). It will need a good kicking about before it can be worn but then, when I want, I can pin on a sprig of whortleberry for attendance at Games in NA, an XMTS badge for some occasions, or just as it is for keeping my head toasty and dry the rest of the time.

But you asked about the "Highland bonnet" at $24. I'd like to see another view of this (or two); on first viewing, though, I have to say uh-uh -- at least for me. Looks like just another beret to these eyes.
