Anyways... McMurdo, you have inspired me. I was thinking about getting a PC myself, but I have changed my mind. I think an Argyll is more than appropriate for what I do. Never over dress the bride. A black Argyle with a Clergy tartan waistcoat- that would look spectacular! At least in my mind's eye...

Nighthawk, the PC is evening wear. I doubt all the weddings you do will be after six type weddings. On the other hand, A black Argyle will cover all your needs if you get the five and the three button waistcoats.
I think you would be much better off with the Argyle.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I'm not an expert, but I am telling Nighthawk to get the Argyle because he will be inflicting the weddings before and after "six" most likely. As far as I have ever heard, the PC is evening wear and only evening wear. The Black silver button Argyle can serv as day wear, as in a morning coat with striped pants, or as a black tie evening wear jacket, as in a tuxedo; all depending on the waistcoat and accessories etc.
If you must wear a bonnet, wear a Balmoral.
I only understand this from reading a great deal of MacMillan of Rathdown's posts, as well as others, on the subject.
Here are my supporting quotes from this thread on the subject.

As stated elsewhere in this thread the hat is only worn outdoors, never inside.

That's just the way I understand it.

You are right, Ted, with regards to the PC, but in Scotland the "silver button" Argyll is really only appropriate for a less formal evening or early-evening than would require a tux (for those not usually kilted, think of your very best business suit). For earlier in the day, look at Glen's (McMurdo) pics -- the second one in particular.
The question you asked, though, Brooster, was what "hat" to wear with a PC, and the answer remains the same: nothing and almost never. But if you add an Inverness cape to keep out the chill and the damp (apparently not in NM at your temps), it is appropriate to wear a Balmoral until -- and only until -- you cross the threshhold and remove the Balmoral before you remove your cape. Etiquette 103.2.1
Oh goshgolly how rigid. How traditional.
Ah, but the wedding late afternoon in the blazing sun? Wear sunscreen!

Apologies to all who have seen this picture before but I am just posting it as an example of an example of the most formal highland dress - and what is to be seen on his head? -

I only know what I have read on the forum about the Black silver button Argyle with three button waistcoat being acceptable as part of black tie attire.
It's really not something I need to be worried about; I would rent a tux if I were ever invited to a black tie event. My advice was to Nighthawk.

I am sooooooo confused! Is that a PC oor an Argyle? Is the Hat a Glenngary or a Balmoral? And he's wearing a belt which I thought was taboo! I think I'll bag the whole thing and wear my Hawaiin shirt and Saffron Kilt with pink crocks!

That looks something like a Kenmore doublet:

The Kenmore doublet is cross between a Montrose and a Sherrifmuir. It is a single breasted, full closure jacket with flaps front and rear. Silver buttons decorate the front, flaps, and cuffs. Normally worn with a jabot and cuffs.

The bonnet would be a Glengarry.

Brooster that is what you wear for a white tie event, completely different than what you would be looking for. Again I think something like the photos I put up would do you fine.
