The only one generalizing is you. I fail to see in any of my posts where I owe this women an appology as with the vast majority of the responders.

It's well known if something is posted on here, people will give their opinion. On a subject that touches everyone here... Pretending to be Scottish.... It's not an act to wear a kilt.. So some are not Scottish, but they do not talk with a bad Scottish accent, they do not portray themselves in another manner which will make others believe they are from Scotland. They just like to wear a kilt.. For some it's called Celtic Revivalism others is just plain comfortable.. To insinuate one is pretending is insulting... It's personal to those on a site dedicated to kilt wearing... If feelings were hurt.. It was not because these people targeted her, most on here are normally fun loving people who avoid hurting each others feelings, even when they disagree.

Please do not direct your anger at those who felt the choices they make in life are flippantly refered to as Pretending to be Scottish.

And it's good you feel you have to defend your friend.. Friends do that, especially the good ones. It's just all sides need to be viewed before assumptions are made in haste.

She was told Square Dancing. Do I have to remind you what square dancing is? Or what square dancers wear? . . .
Since everyone else was pretending to be a cowboy or cowgirl, the gentleman in a kilt would be standing out from the crowd.
I'm not sure when's the last time you've been square dancing, so before you 'remind' everybody what we wear, let me tell you what square dancers wear here in the 21st century.

I square dance at least twice every week and was at that same convention, and like Mein and at least a third of the men, was kilted all weekend. You'd be hard-pressed to find a petticoat or string tie, but kilts, tank tops, and cargo shorts are the norm--and nobody's pretending to be anything. The kilt is so popular for square dancing that there's even a session [packed] for kilt-wearers! We dress for comfort, not for costume.

Maybe this lady was just arriving at the hotel and hadn't noticed what everyone was wearing as she made her way through the lobby and corridors [which indicates that she's incredibly clueless, or at least nonobservant], but she certainly could have expressed her confusion in a less confrontational way.

Btw, I'm not saying she couldn't have phrased her question better, however, it does not deserve the rude and insulting responses given here.
She didn't get those responses either, unless she's reading this forum.

Please feel free to don that above mentioned attire and march around the streets of Glasgow. Should the "traditional cowboys" tell you that it's not correct to wear spurs on your flipflops ignore them.

I live in Texas, and dress "like a cowboy." Wrangler jeans (they're comfy,) pearl snap shirts (easy to take off,) my cow pie kickers (or shiners [boots]) and when I go out, my 20X Stetson.

I went to France dressed like this 90% of the time when I was in high school. Lots of people asked if I rode a Horse to work/school/etc.

There's a lot of mis-conceptions about peoples of all types.

Good heavens! It appears we left the locker room door open again! Madam, if you would kindly avert your eyes, lest you see that we sometimes boast more than is warranted.
At any moment you must be prepared to give up who you are today for who you could become tomorrow.
