I had occaation to be in chi town yesterday and ended up at a resturant that had a table tent advertising the Northshore #6. I decided to give it a try, dry martini.
First I had to send back an appletini the waiter brought out.
Then the bartender brought over a vodka martini.,
    Finally the gin arrived.

It was very flowery and not at all what I would consider a proper gin, more like after shave. Really it was so different from normal gin, they should just call it a flavored vodka.

I think I'll stick with my Plymouth.

Long time lurker, first time poster. Figures gin would bring me out. It's like Mother's milk to me.

I love a good G&T, martini, greyhound, whatever really. Bombay Sapphire is the mainstay around here, but there's nothing wrong with a good Tanqueray. I'll drink a Gordon's or Beefeater without complaint if I have to. Plymouth, not quite as impressed with. Hendricks makes an amazing G&T with cucumber instead of lime. Really, trust me and try it if you haven't already.

Gin, like scotch, varies according to ones own palette. I enjoy Bombay and Plymouth when I can get my hands on it. I avoid Boodles like the plague, rotgut is too good a word for it.

    Hello all,

I am the co-founder of North Shore Distillery, and just happened upon your forum. Just by way of background, we are a small craft distillery (the first of our kind in Illinois), and we handmake two gins, among other spirits. They were rated the best American gins last year, but they are totally different from other gins, and from each other.

Beloitpiper - thanks for your kind words, and for recommending our gin (especially No. 11). I'm so glad you enjoyed our gins, we have a lot of fun making them and telling people about them.

Mull/Joe - I'm very sorry you didn't enjoy our No. 6 gin, although I appreciate you giving it a try (and I'm sorry to hear about the bad customer service, too). We call No. 6 our "Modern Gin," in that it has a lot of juniper, but also has citrus, spice and floral notes - it's very nuanced, and complex, with many flavors besides juniper (as you noticed). Our other gin, No. 11, which is the one Beloitpiper liked, is a more old-school, classic-style gin, with abundant fresh juniper, hints of spice and citrus, and a drier, crisper finish.

As Rob noted, gin drinkers are very particular about what they like and why.
If ever our paths should cross, and you were willing, I'd be more than happy to buy you a No. 11 martini instead - I am hopeful you would find that gin more to your liking.

    Cheers all.
