Are there any Scottish Societies in NY that hold regular meetings? If so maybe you could attend with a print out of your lovely design and appeal to them directly. Good work on it, by the way!

Made a nice background for my computer, at the very least. Hope this moves forward! I'm trying to think of any contacts I may have. Just another wrinkle...but "if" Nick owns the original version now, do any of us have the 'right" to be passing it around to other organiztions at all? Just thinking....

Glad you like it. It probably won't hurt to feel people who might help out a bit but sharing the design outside the forum right now is probably not a good idea. Whether we go forward with this, or another, design, we'll want to make sure people are primed to help.

I don't want to be a killjoy, but I did post in the original thread my experience with trying to get the NYC tartan made official. The NYS legislature is even more notoriously contentious (and non-productive?). Once a tartan HAS been agreed upon, just be aware that it will be a very big task to get it approved, perhaps unless you have the backing of groups like Scottish societies all around the state.
P.S. I was advised in the process that, since Locharran is the copywrite(?) owner of the NYC tartan, I needed their written authorization for the process to proceed. I was able to get that without problem, and I assume that Nick would be equally cooperative. Just know to have it in black and white, should that issue arise with this one.

Reason: add the p.s.

In the original thread Jamie Mungall mentioned that people complained when the Louisiana legislature approved their tartan because they thought it was frivolous. He explained that a lot of frivolous stuff gets done in sessions because most of the real; work is done in committee, so feel-good items appeal to the legislators.
The situation in the NY legislature is so fractious right now that a feel-good, non-partisan, non-political measure might stand a better chance than something more serious. Who we approach and how we sell it can also make a big difference.
Stay tuned for further developments!
Regards,
Brian

Call them "drab" if you want, but I really like muted tartans in earthy colors!
These two are quite attractive, though. Maybe too much yellow for my taste....

LOL, Brian. My friend is not fond of a lot of yellow, either. This much gold may be at her limit.
FWIW, I also like muted and earthy colors. I'm partial to lovat green and pine needle. The nice thing about that range is that so many other colors - bright or muted - work very well with them. They are very versatile tools in the tartan designer's palette.

Great that this process is moving along!
I would suggest that we who care about this matter work out which single tartan to push. Given the perpetual show in Albany, looking for them to make a decision might slow things down till we have our own Governor Schwartnegger....in twenty years!

it can be done
if I could offer a bit of advice, I did this 7 years ago (almost) myself, in getting a tartan OK'd by my state legislators. It can be done, you just need a strategy and a knowledge of the process to make it work.
