Don’t worry about the tie I’m not a big fan either.

I understand where you’re coming from and for truly formal situations tartan is the way to go, but for looking smart for a night out I feel it works and it’s a bit different. Currently this is the best made kilt I own (A proper tank) so it will mostly be worn casually since to be honest I don’t have a need to wear a suit as much as I would like.
The jacket and waistcoat will go with my other kilts including my cooper one when I fit into it again and will make a nice change instead of my Argyle or PC

    The hielan' man he wears the kilt, even when it's snowin';
He kens na where the wind comes frae,
But he kens fine where its goin'.

I'm quite courious about your comments how does one look highland?
By wearing highland dress. The primary defining characteristics of which are the kilt and tartan. Not that I have anything against non-tartan kilts or tartan trews and you look fine in your black kilt. However, the question posed by tetley88mark was about
ways to make that outfit look more highland
. Adding tartan to the kilt IMHO would make it look much more highland.

the only option i can see to wear an outfit i'm comfortable in and not upset them is to buy or rent a predominantly red kilt for the occasion they've said the problem isn't the kilt but the fact stewart hunting is green so if i got hold of one that was mainly dark red maybe?

    Thumbs up Looking Sharp

You look good in the picture and you'll be a hit with the ladies. The sporran actually looks just right with the jacket and kilt. I can't see your kilt pin, but you need one to finish the look. If you have a nice formal sgian dhub or even a sterling topped safety sgian dhub, add that. If you could replace the rouch tie with a regular flat fabric tie in the exact same shade, you'd be close to perfect. All you need is a red rose boutonierre.

If you go to the tartan kilt, switch to gray socks. Otherwise, stick with the black Argyll with the vest. I've never had a problem looking too formal so I'd avoid tweed in any color for a wedding.

If you already had a Royal Stewart kilt (assuming it's your family tartan) you could put on a fashion show for the bride and see if she likes that better than the black.

I think the Stewart of Bute is a dark red.

after some incredible good fortune with shops and ebay i've managed to aquire everything i need for this outfit and not even dented the budget i set myself so i've decided to be a bit cheeky, theres enough time before the wedding to save and get a real hand made wool kilt for the occasion and after, i've gone and ordered swatches of 6 tartans i really like and would wear that would also meet their requirements and i'm going to let them choose which they'd prefer to see me in on the day if they don't like any of them then i'll respect their wishes wear the black and buy myself a nice kilt in my choice but well it doesn't hurt to give them some options and ask

Congratulations on your good fortune tetley88mark. "Cheeky", never! Generous to a fault!
i'm going to let them choose which they'd prefer to see me in on the day if they don't like any of them then i'll respect their wishes wear the black
The bonus, if they chose the black, is that you get unrestricted choice.

Dogs are not just for Christmas and kilts are not just for weddings - both are for life IMHO
