I used to know an old farmer (he died about 5 years ago aged about 85) who was born, bred and lived all his life in Caithness, Scotland and always wore a kilt even when working on the farm. He had several hats for formal and work. For work/day wear he used to wear a straw trilby hat in summer and a wool tweed flat cap in winter with a tweed jacket. He only wore his tam for the games. He was typical of the older farmers up here.

    So exactly what is traditional?

These old guys knew exactly what to wear and when depending on season and weather.

The fedora look great to me.

Would everyone please notice that I am not posting this as Steve. That hat is off.

I waited quite a while to post to this thread simply because I wanted to watch and see how it was going to go first. I figured that as soon as I posted, the mood of the thread would change just because.

    So I waited and watched.

Someone came to this forum and asked an honest question.

I was quite surprised to see so many replies to that question stated in such a negative voice. So many comments that just made blanket statements offering no real help to the original posters question.

When did this forum become a war between "Right' and "Wrong"?

When did this forum become a place where one way of wearing the kilt is thought to be more proper or right than another?

It was my belief that this forum was about the kilt. I thought that this forum was about helping one another. I thought this forum was about offering a balanced and thoughtful answer to an honest question.

I have always held the belief that if someone comes to this forum and asks an honest question, that they deserve an honest answer. They come here for help. They deserve the best help that I have to offer.

Instead what I seem to see, more and more, are short "That's not how we do it." or "You shouldn't do it that way" type of posts on the one hand, and "I can do whatever I want" and "you can't tell me what to wear" posts on the other hand. No explanations given, no reasons or even examples offered. No effective help accomplished.

When did we become so polarized? When did this forum become an "us-or-them" sort of place.

And to tell the truth I'm embarassed. I'm embarassed that this has developed here.

I am going to become much more vocal on this forum. I am going to offer my help and assistance whenever and wherever I can. The thing that will be foremost in my mind is stepping outside myself to help others. Helping them to understand. Helping them to enjoy a love for the kilt.

If I make a comment like "I think this would look good" or "I don't think this would look good", I am going to give the reasons behind why I believe the way I do. I won't offer comments that sound like they are coming from god or from sort of rebellion without at least explaining the reason behind my comment.

If I offer a comment about my personal belief I am certianly going to state clearly that it is just my personal belief and that no one else is bound to believe as I do just because I say so.

I am also going to lead by example. We all learn best by example.
This forum is all about photos. We have a saying, "No pics, it didn't happen." Well, guess what. I have a personal style. It is not the right style, it's not a wrong style. But it is my style.
How can I possibly offer my belief in my style without pictures of myself? How can someone state "this is how we do it" and not back that up with pics of themselves doing it that way? And it is even worse if they post a pic of someone else then state "That is the way we do it." Sorry, that reasoning just doesn't hold water.

I won't come here to lay down the law. I also won't come here to tear down the establishment. If someone posts in that tone what it really says to others is "This is all about me. I don't care about or want to help you."
Well guess what. If someone posts with that tone, then you will find me challenging you. I will challenge you to back up your words with reasons. I will challenge you to back up your statements with photos of yourself doing it.

I originally came to this forum because, what I found were others, willing to help me to understand. They offered polite and reasoned critic and advice. They offered examples which I could emulate or not as I saw fit. I will not let that feeling of helping, of explaining, of assisting another, to go away.

I don't care if your a Traditionalist or an Anarchist. If you are not able to step outside your own Ego, to stoop down to help and assist another kilt wearer, then I am sorry for you.

The Wizard of BC is going to be here for the good of the kilt. Period.

For cajunscot: I , for one, certainly hope you don't "shake the dust from the
sandals", as I enjoy the contributions you make. As I have said, there are those who deliberately misread so they can rant or gain the upper hand or
glare down from Mount Olympus. At least some of the time. You always play fair and frequently supply citations and/or personal experience/insight.
This has been helpful to me and enjoyed and appreciated by me.

I appreciate the traditional viewpoint. I frequently agree. I frequently disagree. I know of no one viewpoint that actually covers everything that comes up. I also know that traditionally, Highland Scots wore what they had, and of what they had, they wore it as they chose. As it should be. You always want to look good, but sometimes you just don't have it, and I guess we all have days we want to do something different, even if it's wrong. Your friends are those who'll stand with you, and say "That may look goofy, but I'll trust you to dress yourself".

I think the problem with the shif in attitude is that a lot of the "old guard" left with their knowledge base and we haven't had time to reshuffle ourselves yet. But that's just my tuppence.

Now the fedora I have I feel doesn't suit me while I'm wearing a kilt, but I do have a nice leather bush whacker hat which while not traditional is alot better than my balmoral when it's raining(which in Scotland is often )
    The hielan' man he wears the kilt, even when it's snowin';
He kens na where the wind comes frae,
But he kens fine where its goin'.

Your post is a good example of what I meant. You chose to take my message as a general attack on you, and you responded in anger.

You are correct on two points. I am not a traditionalist, and my comments most certainly do apply to both traditionalists and non-traditionalists. In fact my comments should apply to anyone who posts on this forum. We should all be capable of giving opinions with out being dismissive of the opinions of others, and none of us should assume that we have the correct opinion and have no need to respect other posters.

Was it really necessary to be so nasty and sarcastic? Is it so hard to accept that given the size of this forum, there are bound to people who do not share your view of the things?
