Well I never really thought about an "influence" other than the way my dad dressed at the Portland OR Highland games and the fantastic uniforms of the pipers and drum majors wore back then. Anyone notice how pipe band uniforms seem to have become more casual these days.

Something about this portrait really resonates with me as well. I like the contrasting feel of "this is all the best stuff I have, and I make it work even though it definitely isn't matchy-matchy."

His sporran seems to have held up well over the years.

.....Huffpost. Notice the subtle pattern on his jacket/waistcoat and plain hose. He's also rocking a decent size knot on his repp tie.


JAMD. Sweater (jumper) under tweed for a more relaxed look.


Dailymail. No tie or jacket for a casual---but still smart!---kilted look with a sweater.

That's an interesting cantle.

Indeed. Sometimes referred to as the "Prince Charlie cantle' for what reason I do not know. It's definitely my favourite style of cantle for goat or horsehair sporrans. Pipers and officers of the Atholl Highlanders wear this style of cantle, and I used to own a sporran molach (modeled after Lachlan Macpherson's sporran, also one of MacLeay's Highlanders) that featured one too.

Throwing with the Heavies at the Games has changed how I think about kilts. I no longer think of them as ceremonial wear, or formal kit, or even just "nice clothes". I have "Nice" kilts, for sure, but I've gotten filthy dirty, sweat pouring down my face, mud up to my knees, and @rs3 over teakettle in kilts. I've done all that on my own on the practice field, while backpacking and in front of large crowds of people. I've seen Scottish athletes wear unkempt kilts and yet they are great lads.

So I don't find myself standing on too much "doctrine" regarding kilt wear. Strap it on and go about your business.

I like the shape of the angled cantle. It's a refreshing change from the plethora of oval cantles.
