1st time in public
I went for a walk on the South Downs near the southern coast of England the other day and thought I would probably wear my blackwatch kilt. Nice weather up there so it was quite busy. I strategically had my sunglasses on so that i could scan around for peoples reactions, which i have to say, were completely non-existant.
When walking in the English countryside it is polite to acknowledge people when you walk past. I don't recall anyone even glancing at my kilt. Mind you, if you're going to wear a kilt outside of Scotland or Ireland, i would say the place were you are least likely to get reactions would be England, considering that it borders Scotland. People probably just think it is a stray Scotsman that has just fallen below the border.
Only downside to the walk was that it was rather hot. About 30 degrees.

Benji,
That's because people are used to seeing men in kilts on the South Downs, but 99 times out of 100 it will be Hamish.

Hi Ben,
I seemed to have missed your first visit to Tom's Café and I am wondering where you live if you were walking on the South Downs? Frequently, I am to be found up there, on The SD Way, as it is just a few minutes from my home here in Storrington, West Sussex.
At this time of year, I have to admit, I'll be wearing a cotton Utilikilt (or similar) in preference to a woollen kilt - they are SO much cooler.
Like you, I seldom get any reaction at all to my kilts, wherever I am let alone on the South Downs Way.
By the way, there are several of us in the area. For example Dave W. (currently on holiday) lives at Hayling Island. We meet up roughly once a week for a pub meal - you might care to join us sometime. E-mail me at "lycrakilt@aol.com" and I'll let you have my 'phone number so we can chat.
