Thank you.
They were zip inserts as ratspike mentioned, only I got mine on ebay.

For hiking, hiking boots, socks at calf height, over the boots, since they are wool hiking socks, not kilt hose they aren't scrunched.
Those are beautiful boots.

In the summer, for a casual look, I have these Harley boots. I wear the socks down. I tend not to wear them with socks pulled up. That is kind of backwards because in the winter I would want the boots but socks up for warmth.

For Steampunk I have these lace up knee high boots. These are only worn as a costume. They are uncomfortable and take forever to put on as I have to lace them up from the bottom.

For steampunk I have a brown pair of hobnail boots, or black chelsea boots, but I don't wear a kilt. High boots just wouldn't look right on me, plus I couldn't be bothered with all those laces, you must be very patient.

I generally wear my knee-high (8-button) boots from Native Earth. Mine look like this photo from their site, but the primary color is a dark brown and the accent color is hunter green, and the buttons are stag horn. They go VERY well with my Stewart Hunting Tartan.

Thank you, Bob,
I have been 'blessed' with super-wide feet, so it's great to get a lead on what should be comfy footwear. Your idea of the zip is brilliant! Appreciate the link.
This is an amazing rabble!
