I must agree with you on this point as well. I too like to match my articles of clothing and tattersall shirts with a kilt never entered my arena of possibilities. Unfortunately they are not available at affordable prices here.

What's odd is that I saw those things, patterned shirts and jackets, from the get-go but they didn't register until I joined this site. I got stuck in the usual Pipe Band matchy thing.
Here's my journey with these things

Not as such a light bulb moment for me as I grew up withe concept but watching the light bulb come on for members of the forum when Jock and Rex explained the concept of "it's just not done old boy". I could hear the little pings of the light bulbs all the way over here. Cheers

Many Americans have a built-in difficulty with that sort of thing.

Like many of you, I’ve had many “light bulb moments” since ordering my first Sport Kilt and joining XMTS nearly two years ago. I had done a little bit of research and some forum browsing before I took the leap, but I showed up here mostly in ignorance.
Two light bulb moments that come to mind are:
1.) Coming to understand the "rules" of Traditional Highland Civilian Dress (at least some of them):
Having gotten into kilts having mostly seen them worn casually (or worse) at ren-faires and a couple of local festivals, I have come to appreciate some of the “proper” ways to wear a kilt. Even if I still tend to dress casually, some of the ideas I’ve learned here have had some influence on how I dress... and I’ve developed a great respect for the traditions from which I’m borrowing.
2.) Realizing that the adoption of clan tartans was a rather recent development, as opposed to a more ancient tradition.
Some things can be assumed to be “the way it has always been”, yet truthfully have *not* always been. The fact that some of these traditions were just beginning to evolve in the last 200 years (and continue to evolve) help make my kilted experience more personal to me. Tradition has given me solid ideas to draw from but has not forced me into a rigid wardrobe structure. My taste and style will continue to change as I get older and as I learn/see more in these forums. I have noticed that as much as I’m drawn toward modern styles and utility-kilts, I find myself also “online window shopping” for things like MOD kilts, tweed and Argyll jackets, waistcoats and dress sporrans.
XMTS has been an enlightening and supportive experience for me. Thanks to each of you who contribute your opinions regularly. I see value in all of it.

I've been in this wonderful forum for only one year, however with my savvy researching/searching skills I applied to this forum. I was able to dug up many old threads where I absorbed the vast knowledge, tips, advice, and the others from the contributors who may not be active anymore, from the old schools who's been around for years, and the newbies who asked many great questions to be answered gracefully.
There's not a thread that's a light bulb moment for me, but the network VIA XMTS webbed together to help me to appreciate the meaning, the history, and the adaption of the kilt through times. The threads with the photos are my favorite since I enjoy the visual aid to get a better idea of a tartan, a shoes/boots to go with, tweed jacket/waistcoat, and many others. One thing that I wish would be different for XMTS for the newcomers like me there are not too many "expired" photo that's no longer be seen which I miss out on regretfully.
The great amount of overall acceptance from the XMTS members toward to our different opinions/tastes of how to wear a kilt and our choices of accessories is something that stuck with me in the heart, and greatly appreciated.

To address the issue of outdated pics or pics with just a icon is not an issue of the forum. In almost every case the photo is the property of the individual member. Those photos may have been moved, re-sorted, re-filed, deleted by the member or for some reason are no longer available from the member.
In very, very few cases is this a forum issue. Very, very few photos are actually hosted on the forum's servers.

Steve ... I did not bring this up as a criticism of the forum.
Cheers....

That's correct. My statement about those pics with the icons wasn't a criticism of this wonderful forum, but to reckon how much the newcomers like me who stumped into this forum missed out on those photos that had posted years ago to our great losses.
Naturally, the photos with the icons/out of dated photos are very common in the long-standing forums anyway.
