My wife was the same, she hated me wearing the kilt when I first started, said it was "disgusting", but now I have quite a collection of kilts has changed to "slightly tolerant", though some events she doesn't mind me being kilted like weddings or parties. It is hard to go against the sartorial grain and I think anyone who wants to wear a kilt has to pluck up the courage the first time round. Kilts pics on Instagram was a good way to see some just getting on with their day to day, while kilted, others going for a party or function

FWIW. At the Games we go to and run the COSCA/STA information booth, I often address the issue of wearing the kilt. Thanks to Steve Ashton for bringing up the point about physical differences. I know a gentleman who uses an electric wheelchair who looks mighty fine in his kilt. Also, i tell those gentlemen of a certain girth (such as myself) that a kilt is a flattering garment for us.

But back to the main point. You can easily tell if a man is interested in exploring this "kilt" thing or not. For those "not" I may say something like this - I'll hold up 3 fingers and say - first, they feel comfortable and if you did try one you would like it. second, the ladies love them. three (here i put down that third finger) you don't need a third reason if you need another reason beside those I cannot help you.

If there is a lady present with the gentlemen, I have NEVER seen her shake her head no, it is ALWAYS shaken in the affirmative.

The Shriners out here have their own pipe band which collects a wide assortment of mainstream people who may have never had any exposure to pipes and kilts previously. You see this amazing mass of guys in regalia marching and piping, and afterwards they say they meet Wednesdays and come on over. Scottish heritage is barely ever mentioned, let alone considered. Because they're a tight group with numbers, they typically take pride in showing up kilted to gatherings and meetings, and occasionally a very ambitious one will wear his rig to loosely related events for a conversation starter about his connection with some influential band members. My personal theory: Those guys are having such a good time the particular article of clothing doesn't matter, and that ring-knocking networker would wear a lampshade on his head if it somehow carried the right significance.

With enough popularity and support, almost anything can catch on.

Larry, unlike most here, I know you. I've seen you in action. I think it would be a very rare person who would take
umbrage at that statement out of your mouth. Yes, there are many who would offend with that remark; you, the OP,
Father Bill, Thistledown, and many others could easily use that without offense. No need for you to feel chastened, no
    need to adjust.

Real men do wear kilts; they also wear any other garment they wish. It is a good thing to learn to face one's fears
head on, and teach yourself that no one else should dictate your choices. Knowing that you can do something, and
survive, doesn't mean you then choose to set about getting in everyone's face with those choices. Common sense
and an awareness of the feelings of others around one will guide one's sense of appropriate behavior.

The OP will recall that someone (possibly in his personal awareness) used to use as their undersignature statement
"When God looks down and sees a kilted man, he smiles; when the devil looks up and sees a kilted man, he's afraid.".
I have shared that often, and it never fails to arouse a smile. Folks, it's mostly in the delivery. When people say to me
they, or their husband, couldn't or wouldn't ever wear a kilt, I just smile and say, "Sure you can. All my life I heard we
were Scottish, and I wanted a kilt, but they weren't appropriate for the offices and restaurants I worked in, and as a
stagehand/rigger/lighting tech I was often 10 to 350 feet above folks heads. Definitely not appropriate. Now I'm old,
and I don't do that anymore, so I can wear what's comfortable. I put one on and pretty immediately told myself I
never needed another pair of pants as long as I live." Doesn't mean I never wear anything else: common sense and appropriate choices in attire. And behavior. That approach always elicits positive responses, and agreement.
