A dramatic example of how a tartan can look different when rendered in different colour-schemes is the tartan Bruce of Kinnaird. Arizona pipe band Mesa Caledonian wore it in Ancient colours for many years. Recently they switched to the same tartan in Modern colours. Here they are

I know them...

Muted Gunn is a very nice tartan and was the choice of the Chief for many years. He is now sporting an ancient Gunn kilt made for him by a member's wife. I have had a muted Gunn kilt for 24 years and, even though I have modern and weathered as well, it is still my favorite.
Matching with hose, etc. is not really difficult at all, at least I have never had a problem with it. You just need to shop around a bit, with your kilt in hand. And, the tartan itself is attractive. It is, of course, the modern Gunn with muted hues. It ain't ugly!

As pointed out, that is the Chief and he has been wearing that tartan for at least thirty years. He has excellent taste in tartan.

Smart looking band

But tastes differ! And you don't like them. Are red tartans your favourites? Do you like green & blue tartans in modern colours?
Buying a kilt is a big investment, and I couldn't imagine buying a kilt I didn't like.
I played in this band for a couple years. I loved these kilts! (Flower Of Scotland tartan, nearly identical with Ancient Gunn.)

That is and was a very smart looking band. I especially like the way the diced hose look with that kilt as per the Drum Major's kit, Reminds me of
an well known old painting of the Duke of Atholl's family circa 1780 by David Allen.
I find it interesting how wonderful the buff or yellowish hues of the Waistcoat in this painting sets off the hues of the Tartan as well as the diced hose. I think it is a great look, especially with a lovat colured jacket.
While we are on this subject... Who was it that decided it was not appropriate to wear Diced Hose for daywear? The Victorians and everyone before them seem to wear patterns of some sore quite frequently. I would say that should be seen as Traditional.

In another thread I've just asked the question, "Where does historical end and traditional begin?" Any thoughts, gentlemen?

Sometimes when a person speaks or writes with authority .....he is presumed to know what he is speaking/ writing about ......history is full of examples where that isn't necessarily so......but it's the best we have so far

Flower of Scotland tartan is based on Gunn tartan. It honors the late Ronnie Williamson of The Cories, who wrote the song, Flower of Scotland.

Some of you may be happy to know that I have decided the Muted Gun is not so bad after all, especially seeing the pics Richard posted. I even wore it today.A few weeks ago I heard a young woman on her phone in Target (dept.store) say she just saw somebody in the ugliest kilt... that looked like a girly kilt, so that must have stuck in my head subconsciously. The Muted Gunn is still my least favorite Gunn version however.
