Tonight we shared a gift from a dinner guest: Cu Bocan by Tomatin. This distillery, just down the road, switches from its unpeated general production to a lightly peated one for a week every year. This bottling is named for the village's ghost dog. Nice after-dinner dram.

Nothin, nada. Gave up drinking...until tomorrow night during the Scotch Drinkers Book Club. Won't know what the scotch is until we have all sampled it, rated it, tried to guess where it is from and what ABV, then we will find out what bottle it came from. Then Saturday there will be the Burns Night party where the host has over 100 different bottles of Single Malt Scotch that guests can sample. After that, I will go back on the wagon. I have tried all that have been mentioned here.
Caol Ila is one of my favorites. A surprisingly good scotch is the Laphroaig Cask Strength. It is a completely different animal than the usual Laphroaig 10 year.

On January 20, I offered a toast to my father, who was born that day in 1925 (and passed in 1982), and to his father, to as far back as I could go (with just the same dram, mind). Still using the Tomintoul 16.

Spent the afternoon helping a friend distill some whisky. Made from heavily peated malt. I wanted to learn where to cut over from hearts to tails. This is a local artisan distillery in town and they just got this still and have used it only a few times now.

My wife and I had my best man (at our October 2014 wedding and friend of 42 years) and his wife visit from Austin over the past weekend. We double-dated for St. Valentine's Dinner on Saturday and I hosted a small scotch-tasting among the four of us on Sunday evening. I had the bunch taste a Talisker 10, a Tomintoul 16, and a Springbank 15. Instead of picking a favorite, all were appreciated and thankfully not wasted! We cleaned our pallets in between drams with an assortment of 3 cheeses and Carr's Table Water Biscuits.

Good for you Jack! We had a malt tasting at the St. Andrews Society, City of Albany, NY last night, a fairly regular occurrence. We started out with some Famous Grouse, then had presentations on Benromach 10 and Craigellachie 13. I preferred the Benromach.
Cheers!

Thanks, Frank!
I have never tried a Benromach before, but I do like the Speysides. I will have to consider a purchase after I try a sample at Houston's only Scottish pub (if they have it).

No problem Jack. Both those were Speysides. The Benromach was awarded Ralfy's whiskey of the year last year! Check out Ralfy's reviews here: http://www.whiskyreviews.blogspot.com/

Tonight, I had my first taste of Drambuie, a blend of aged Scottish whisky, spices, and heather honey. It is scrumptious! int:

I've been an Irish Whiskey drinker, Jameson 12 year old. This past week my wife got me a bottle of Jameson 12 year old and Jameson Black Barrel. For Christmas she got me a bottle of Oban 14 year old.
