Amazing new developements have taken place!!
In the time of my sick leave our nursing home celebrated itīs 90th anniversary. In the morning it began with a church service - this being a "christian" house! In all papers an congreations invitations to attend were given, so I went there for the service. Afterwards I left quickly having other appointments. This was the 3. of december.
On the 30th I recieved a letter telling me that I am not allowed to wear my kilt when I am in the house in my free time, as a private person. The same director had been there and felt offended again!
So now I will have a talk with the liason between personnel and management board.
But the gall!! My New year at least was ruined, I was fuming!

This is interesting. Do German citizens not have constitutional rights? Do you have a lawyer who might write this gentleman a letter explaining them?

I do not have a lawyer yet, first I will see what comes out of the talk with the liason. I do hope we can settle on my rights being observed by everyone concerned. If not I will see what I can do, this time I have no intention at all of backing down. Even my wife who does not really like my kilts is with me this time. And my workers council is also preparing for the fight!

I had a not so similiar episode many moons ago, when the pastor asked me not to wear my Kilt to service. It was said with humor, and kindness but the request was clear. I mentioned it on xmarks and received overwhelming support and advice. I thought about it, prayed about it, and came up with the scripture...a house divided against itself cannot stand. I go to church to worship, and draw closer to God. To be with other believers, and reinforce my faith. If my kilt is somehow...distracting, then it has to go. I don't mind punching a guy at the bus stop for trying to peek under my kilt (after all, Jesus threw the money changers out of the temple) but I cannot see anything good coming out of a fight with the church. Division, hurt feelings, passive aggressive attitudes, resentment, etc. Some things are worth fighting for, yes, but some things are more important then our rights. Remember, Jesus was innocent, but allowed himself to be crucified for the long term results. I would recommend you talk to your spiritual leader, and either find another job or wear pants.

Hermann, I wish you the best of luck. It is unfortunate that the ignorance of one man is dictating what you can and cannot wear in order to satisfy what he is comfortable with.

there may be something helpful.
Christians are just as human as everyone else and can be influenced by cultural conditioning, bias, misinformation etc.
If you can show them that a kilt is a male garment, not female, that Jesus didn't wear trousers etc. you may get somewhere.
I've been in a great variety of church situations kilted, and most of the time found acceptance, no obvious problems.
The "brethren" are very fundamental (a dirty word these days, but i mean it in a positive way), if you know anything of the Bible, you could discuss it on that level.
The Bible is most definately not against the wearing of kilts!!
Let me know if i can help, this concerns me a bit.

I even opened my internet explorer browser and got "Error! There is no article. Have you made a mistake?"
Like to read the article.
I sure am glad I own my own Company.
Hermann, Sorry to hear about the situation intensifying.
Wish you the best in this matter,

Jay,
I feel that Hermann's situation is a bit different. Yes, both are "church" related, but his employer, who is a church organization, is trying to tell him what he cannot wear his kilt in his own house, behind closed doors. Would you feel the same if your pastor told you you could not wear your kilt in your own house?
I applaud your decision to respect your pastor and church by not wearing your kilt to church services. I think you did the right thing.
But, I think we have to draw a line there. I don't know if this employer is associated with the same place of worship that Hermann and his family attend or if its just a job. If it is just a job, and German law is on Hermann's side, then I think he has a right to wear his kilt away from work, without persecution from his employer.
Hermann,
My thoughts and prayers are with you. I'm sorry you have to go through this trial at the beginning of a new year. I hope that you and your employer are able to come to a peaceable solution.

I'd sure put my foot down HARD. Ok, the Pastor prefers the kilt not be worn at services, fine. The boss prefers it not be worn at work, ok. But the second anyone tries to dictate to me what I can and can't wear on my own time they're going to think they tried to take on a grizzly alone and bare handed.

Dang Herminator,
A letter like that would torque anyone off.
Perhaps if you came to work in a flowing robe, sandals, and shepherd's staff until the jerk got used to men in unbifurcated garments....
There are many places to work. No job is more important than my soul.
