To all the new members: I hope that you will stick around and share your kilt-consciousness with us. Each of us brings something to the table, and we are all diminished if we lose a member.
There are really just a couple of things that I try to keep in mind here. Believe me, I have stopped myself before clicking the Submit button on many occasions, and said to myself, "Self, don't go down that road."
We find great value a family-friendly tone. If Jamie's daughter or my grandson develop an interest, we can suggest they come here to learn, and we don't have to worry too much about what they see and hear.
We seek to avoid disagreeable conflict; there are certain topics that just don't get discussed. My educated guess at a rationale for this, is that those topics are likely to lead very quickly to unseemly conflict. That was all decided before I arrived here, but it seems to me a wise decision.
I have spent some time over the years as postmaster, list owner, newsmaster for some thousands of unruly academics. That experience informs the opinion I've just stated, but especially informs my heartfelt thanks to our owner, staff, and Mod Squad for providing the forum I find so informative, and so much fun.
Thanks to all the members, for making it so.

And you know what? It's not just the Mods here who do the policing. We, the members of this clan. have been pretty good at policing ourselves.
It has been stated before and I'll say it again. I don't know how many times I've hit delete, instead of submit, on something I have written. We all have. It is up to each of us to think about what we are saying.
Yes, the Mods do a fantastic job. More times than not we don't even see the really objectionable stuff because they have already caught it, but it is me that controls what I post. My reputation, my image, my persona if you will, is in my hands.
The day a Moderator has to send me a nasty gram due to something I have written is the day I will have to leave. With my tail between my legs and head hung in shame. For this is my home. I don't make messes in my own home.
We have seen people come here before, and hiding behind the anonymity of their keyboards, try to turn this into their own image of the world. And we have seen those same people leave. And then forgotten them.
We all pride ourselves in what we have created here. All are welcome to join us. And all are welcome to leave. It is up to each and every one of us to make that decision. You can choose to write anything, anything at all. And you can choose to take a moment and read over what you have written and ask yourself, "Will this post make X Marks a better place?".

Let's see, page 6 already? Well if anyone is still reading this thread, here's my two pence worth. XMarks the Scot is, bar none, the best experience I have ever had in an on-line community. The members act like adults and the Mods "sheep dog" around the edges keeping this this place enjoyable and entertaining. I know when I pass the web address along to someone - they will find a safe environment full of experts with some pretty wicked funny bones.
I've seen the rest, XMarks is the best.

After more than 1,000 posts I have just recived a PM advising that a post was pulled for reveiw. My reaction? Returned a PM saying I'm at fault and please delete the post. You mods do a great job of maintaining a level of decency and decorum. Thanks.
