Non-Kilted activities?

I slept in a kilt just this sunday. It wasn't all the bad, though it did get a bit bunched up. But it was no worse than wering any other large amount of clothing while sleeping. However, it probably won't make your kilt look very nice.

I don't wear the kilt on extremely windy days, When doing something which may stain, damage or stink up my clothes, or when working out, as I sweat a lot and do excercises which will result in flashing people.

And I don't wear a kilt when I feel like avoiding attention, and especially while doing something that requires be sneaky and not being recognized.

I play squash three times a week. Haven't thought of wearing a kilt while playing. Anyone tried it? (Racquetball would count)

I wouldn't wear a kilt while doing yoga or bagua. I also wouldn't wear it to the gym because there are weight machines that would give 100 of my best friends a view that they probably do not want to see.

That said, I probably could go to the gym if I wanted to be really careful. But I'd rather just work out and not worry about being careful. Still though, I would not wear a kilt for yoga or bagua.

Kilts to me are for dressing nicer.

What it really boils down to is that you can wear a kilt in just about any activity. Just as soon as someone says he would never wear a kilt for something, someone else will chime in and say they do it all the time. So, instead of asking what can you wear a kilt for, the proper question should be when would it be wiser not to wear a kilt.

I absolutely agree with Collin and Dave. I don't really wear casual kilts (tartan, utilitkilt or otherwise) and I don't really care for them, so to me a kilt is a dressier item of clothing and a fairly pricey one at that. The most casual I ever consider myself in a kilt would be the equivalent of a pair of khaki trousers and shirt. So what I wouldn't wear a kilt for is about the same as what I wouldn't wear dressier non-kilt clothes for. I could ride a motorcycle in a Dinner jacket, but I wouldn't nor would I wear a kilt. I play golf or go for a walk in a pair of slacks so a kilt is grand as well. I wouldn't change the oil in my car in a pair of slacks and neither would I wear a kilt.

The second part is that I consider a kilt an item of clothing, one that I like very much, but not a lifestyle. As an item of clothing a kilt is a really bad thing to wear for a lot of activities, either because of a danger to yourself, danger to the kilt or simply because there is something better for the job (bike shorts quickly come to mind). Wearing a kilt for an activity that clearly has better options just to say you do it in a kilt to me is silly. As I mentioned, it's an item of clothing not a lifestyle.

Other than the activities listed like motorcycling, ladder and rock climbing the only exceptions I make are for high winds and walking in bramble infested woods.

The woodland proscription is as much to avoid damaging my fine SWK synthetics as to avoid damaging me.


I think I would avoid wearing one to court in my area - but maybe not.

I don't wear a kilt to the gym...and I don't sail in my kilts.

Sailing in a kilt just makes no sense, most of the time I'm in foul weather gear. You could sail a small boat in a kilt, but I'm not sure what the point is.

Winter stargazing: the clearest night of the year is usually the coldest. Standing around the telescope for hours & hardly moving, I want a base layer, a fleece layer, warm woolen troosers, and perhaps a ski bib.
