Ive often wondered about my own family which is a mix of Cameron, Gordon and Taylor, I have very dark hair but a fire engine red beard (which is why i dont grow it), there is some Davies (maybe Davidsons) or even Welsh, Davies, Im also unusually tall for a Scot at 6.3 in saying that I have Anderson relatives which might account for some Nordic DNA giving me the height

My ethnic heritage can be certified only as German & Dutch, though there is likely more intermingling. I haven't researched the families beyond the Netherlands & Germany.
Since my ancestors (paternal) arrived here in the North America ca. 1720, I mostly just consider myself American, and a Midwesterner to boot. My father's family migrated west and I wander all over.
My mother convinced us that we were Irish, but she was mistaken.
So, I'm proud of my immigrant forbears and of my own nationality with openness toward all.

That's just my, maybe incorrect, opinion on the matter.
How about typical Pictish family names ?

The Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Danes, Vikings and Normans seem to have made far less of a contribution to the British gene pool than is popularly thought.
Further to Gilmore's comment, this thread discusses some of that research.

That article was a terrible one but the thread in entirety does help the issue herein.

I'd say read this firstly:
http://www.heatherrosejones.com/name...hanalysis.html
Also Pictish names of any sort, that are about now anyway, have probably been Gaelicised by the incoming Gaels/Scots or Anglicised by the English/Germanic peoples over the years.
This is alsoa fine link for anyone reading this thread about linguistics of surnames in the Isles:

has anyone read "The Isles" by...deuce i forget his name...I think its Norman Davies or something? I thought it had some pretty good info on the relations of Britain and the surrounding areas including Scandinavia, Brittany and Ireland. It goes from like B.C. to end of 20th century.
