This had me puzzled for quite a while until I remembered the US penchant for using the adjective without the corresponding noun. So I believe this is "folding knives" Yes?
Incidentally, when I was a young lad in the 60s I always carried a penknife (small folding knife) including taking it to school. We used them for sharpening our pencils amongst other things, and no-one thought anything of it. How times change.
As to the Skian Dubh, I have heard that even the decorative plastic ones with no blade have caused concern and confiscation

I definately think it's time I got a sgian brew/sgian don't. I've looked at safety sgian dhu's but I can't say I'm keen on those. The black plastic variety seem rather cheap and nasty. I'm not from a knife wielding background myself so don't feel naked in everyday situations without a knife at my side; now bottle openers on the other hand!
Now; I have read the whole thread and appreciate it was a genuine mistake, that apologies have been offered and graciously accepted however;

I must reiterate the school, airport, court thing. As an attorney, I get to skip security, but I would still never wear my sgian dubh to the courthouse. The laws vary not only state to state, and county to county, but city to city. This makes it tough to keep up on the law. Illinois state law makes it illegal to possess a dagger, dirk, billy, dangerous knife, razor, stiletto, broken bottle or other piece of glass, stun gun or taser or any other dangerous or deadly weapon or instrument of like character with intent to illegally use it against another. This doesn't mean you won't get arrested for just carrying it, but in order to get successfully prosecuted, they would have to show intent.

The only trouble I have ever had was at a privately sponcered city event where one little Hitler dicided he wanted to confidscate my Skeane dubh. I told him it's cost him $45.00. He said I had to put it in the car. He had asked a police officer for help, but the officer responded that it was legal carry so it was out of his realm of control. However the same officer privalty told me the little dictator could have private security escorte me out & advised me to put it in the car. I put it in my sporran.

Dirkie,
Where the deuce was that?
I've only been asked once to remove mine & it was by a church minister. He didn't want a weapon in his sanctuary.
So I shoved it into my sporran - next to another weapon I doubt he would've approved either.

Like said, common sense should prevail as the deciding factor. If there is now common sense... find some.
For the state of Florida, a Sgian Dubh is within the legal blade length and can be worn if visible. Which a Sgian Dubh is worn in a visible fashion anyway. One should also remember, a Sgian Dubh has evolved into a piece of jewelry in most cases.
If you find yourself in a situation, and the sgian dubh becomes an issue, you're probably attracting the wrong kind of attention. Which also brings up another belief of mine, we should be trying to add validity to the wearing of a kilt.

Information:
There is a prescedent for this request -- the ancient right of sanctuary, or right of refuge. A violation of this right was punishable by excommunication, similar to Bruce's excommunication for the murder of The Red Comyn in Greyfriar's Kirk.
At the Kirkin' of the Tartans at my Episcopal parish, we request that gentlemen do not wear swords or dirks out of respect for this ancient custom, but we do allow sgian dubhs.
Very similar to the ancient right of hospitality in the Highlands, which once offered, could never be broken.
regards,
Todd

No argument. But I doubt he was invoking the ancient right of sanctuary.
I cannot even estimate the number of churches I've been in kilted.
This cleric was the only one who objected and I was kind to say he 'asked' me to remove it.
No big deal - and I declined offers to pipe there again.
