I walk to work everyday instead of driving and I have a sidejob playing drums for a swing band. It makes things like that new kilt easier to afford, but I can't just pick up a new kilt anymore.
My girlfriend and I are saving for a house and a wedding. So I'm kinda on a tighter budget now. And yes, it sucks when you have to save and save and save a wait to get that new kilt... but the waiting makes the kilt that much more awesome when you finally get it.

I make all of my kilts now. I haven't bought a new kilt in a year and the last one I bought was a cheapo Gold Brothers job that I wear for throwing. The tartan material is still kind of pricey, but I get the satisfaction of knowing that *I* made it, and also that I've saved the money on the labor costs.

I know what your saying Alan.Theres nothing like the satisfaction when one you make yourself turns out really nice.
Allmost half of the kilts I own I made myself.
My only problem is getting in the mood to start a new one,and sticking with it until its finished.
However I still can't resist purchasing a ready made kilt I really like.
So I keep saving up the chips so that if something comes along I can't live without,I have the funds to buy it.

There are some more fortunate ones here that own a multitude of kilts and accessories that don't think in our league of pennies. It depends what you want to spend your money on, isn't it. If it's your hobby and it brings you pleasure, so be it When I travel around Scotland, I like to try and buy a wee accessory to build it up that way. I have to admit though, it's always credit card.

I learned how to online bank and discovered that I could open up a new account, designate a transfer from my chequing account to the new savings account for whatever amount I desired on whatever day I wanted. I could also name the account. And I could do all that sitting on my butt, no bank visit.
So, every payday, I transfer $55 to the Rainy Day account.

I was fortunate enough to have been able to pay off the mortgage and settle all debts whilst I was still working and, being single, have only myself to worry about - financially that is. Also, I have always been a saver.
So, now, when I want (or crave) a new kilt, I simply remove another wad of notes from either the mattress or under the floorboards, and go for it!
(Believe that, and you'll believe anything!)
Take care,
Ham.
