I think even those of us who are salt and pepper can look good in a jabot, but then again to each their own.

One Jacobite era outfit that I can put together includes a gray period jacket and tartan waistcoat completed with a white jabot.

Honor, Lady Lovat? Wow. Good thing I'm not young.
As to doublets--I voted for the Sherrifmuir for the reasons stated above. Expecially since you can expand your horizons a bit (read that last as a reference to the waistline) and still wear the thing. But I really do like the looks of it, especially with a great kilt.
But, I own a Montrose. And with the jabot and lace cuffs, nothing looks better. The white lace against the black material assures that I am dressed as well as anyone else, and it really is quite striking. I wear it with a white fur sporran (with black tassels), and lots of shiy silver and well-shined black leather. And I, too, have only heard complaints from ladies who dicided I outshone them with the doublet.
And trust me guys, wear the lace. Your women will love it.
But that's only for full dress/white tie functions. Mostly I wear a PC, just as boring as everyone else. Fact is, the PC is a great black tie outfit.

A legitimate question, topped with a thin icing of shameless self-promotion:
Here in Southern California, where rules are meant for breaking, we pair the jabot with a Prince Charlie as seen on the FlamingoKilt.biz Jabot Set web page.
As noted there, we recognize this is not the traditional pairing, but we like the look.
What think you?
Proudly Duncan [maternal], MacDonald and MacDaniel [paternal].

If it's good enough for Sean Connery, well it must be good enough for anyone.

Sounds interesting, but I don't know for sure... Perhaps a thread on the jabot and it's rules is in order.

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I personally like the look of the regulation doublet...with the belt on the outside, and cross belt, AND pipers plaid!!!! I think the picture (off of the vintage photo thread) sums it up pretty well...of course I have always been a fan of the old fashioned style of dress (why cant we bring that back??).

well said! There really isn't anything old fashioned about what he is wearing. One rarely sees the full plaid these days. Same with a dirk, but that doesn't mean they cannot be worn!
