If it's a tartan kilt...
Got to wear a sporran. Or, yeah it's a skirt IMHO.

I love my sporran, but I can easily live without it.

I just can't wear a kilt without a sporran. There are times, setting up camps/tents, etc. that I'll pull it to the side (18th century we wear then from the belt, just slides over) to get it out of the way. But, I don't think a kilt looks right without a sporran. Maybe some of the contemps. or utilikilts, OK? But, I don't own any of these. If I did, I'd still have to wear a sporran.

I think that the kilt looks OK without a sporran. I've seen other gents on this forum that wear the kilt sans sporran and they look just fine.
But, what can I say, I love to accessorize! For me, it's just a great excuse to get some really cool sporrans.. I wish that my new sporran was here from the UK already.

I just received my sporran today along with a belt. My wife didn't care for my kilt before, now she likes the look. I have to say a sporran is a must for me now.

Sorry I'm late.
I have 6 kilts and 0 sporrans. These days I mostly wear my contemporaries, so I wouldn't wear a sporran anyway, but even when wearing my SWKs or my SK I don't really need one.
I have a small pouch I can wear on my belt when I need a place for keys a wallet and a phone, but for the most part I just take advantage of the fact that I am a student and carry a backpack everywhere (It certainly seems like a more logical part of the body to bear the weight of everything I carry)
As others have mentioned, there are also vests, coat pockets, messenger bags, etc. so no, sporrans are not the only option for carrying things.
As for modesty, it is not difficult to make an apron fall between the legs. If you just spread your legs out while taking your seat, then bring them back in a bit, it quickly and discreetly creates the slack necessary to drop the aprons between the legs.
There really is no practical need for a sporran.

I personally would not wear a kilt without a sporran. However, I think it is a matter of personal choice. I think you look more Scottish with the sporran. I also think non tradtional kilts look better without sporrans than traditional kilts do.

After reading pages and pages of responses. The only reason to wear it that I didn't see mentioned was if you didn't wear the sporran, where would you keep your pistol. LOL

I usually wear a sporran with my kilt, but had a choice when I went out for New Years Eve. I had just received my Brian Boru Jacket but was missing a dress Sporran (it was on order, but not yet received). I decided to go with out and just tuck the bear necessaries in my jacket pockets rather than wear a plain black Day Sporran with the outfit.
Looking at the historical photos posted, I don't think I was out of line in doing this.
Cheers!
