Bang on! I have had numerous conversations with Scots visitors to Texas, or first generation Scottish-Americans, who have expressed those very sentiments.

Alan, first, under no circumstances could you be considered a poser for wearing the kilt.
Second, Mr HB3, with the last name of Bailey, is likely to actually have some scottish blood in his surname heritage as there are Bailey, MacKenzie/Bailey Ancient, and at least twelve more Baillie tartans, all or some likely related to him by name in some way. So even he is not a poser. Unless he is an eskimo who was adopted by a family of Baileys.

The real question is...what comes first the attitude or the costume (clothing)?
And does it really matter?

In my mind a poser is an American who smokes Gitanes or Clove cigarettes, wears a beret, and talks about how America stinks compared to Europe. That's a poser.

Exactly! Alan is not a poser, nor is cajunscot--but for different reasons.
The term "poser" is all tied up with ethos. A true traditionalist is not a poser because he/she is inherently embracing the ethos of the tradition (cajunscot, I'm agreeing with you ). But, within any community there are those who ONLY dress/act in the manner of the group in order to fit in--aka poser.
Posing, IMHO, requires a group identity within which to pose. It would be nearly impossible for the "casual," frequent kilt wearer to be a poser unless that person was only wearing the kilt to pretend to be a Scot.
Good conversation BTW! (And please understand I'm not trying to ruffle anyone's feathers.)

Again, I'm not looking for reassurrance, here. I'm quite comfortable in my own skin, when it comes to this part of my life. The point was to stimulate discussion, which is what's happened...it's all good.
