I usually only wear my shirt out with a kilt when I just wear a t-shirt, but with all my other shirts I tuck in. But I think whatever looks best with the kilt in regards the the particular shirt is what he should do. So if a t-shirt looks good out, leave it out, if not tuck in.
When in doubt, TUCK!

If you want a traditional kilt order one from Matt or Barb. Also if you really have such a hate on for Contemporary kilts then don't wear them, but please do not presume to tell others what to wear, it smacks of hypocrisy coming from someone who wants freedom of dress for themselves. I think we would do much better to celebrate our similarities than to focus on our differences.
I apologize to Shantarra. It was a hamhanded attempt at something or other, and I was in a lousy mood when I wrote my reply.

I have a colleague in his 30's and I constantly have to tell him "Tuck your shirt in! What are you? 12?" He even wears a sport coat over a dress shirt with the shirttail hanging out front and back. He claims it's in style now. Bollocks! It's okay with me if my college students in my classes don't tuck in their shirts because they're casual about everything. My colleague seems to think it makes him look younger, which is not possible with his receding hairline.

I'm in the same age group as your colleague. A friend used to dress that way in college. He claimed it was in style then. His dating prospects improved significantly after I badgered him into keeping his dress shirts tucked in.

I have guys that give me the excuse of "I can't keep my shirts tucked in. They keep coming untucked." I tell them to get shirt garters. They look at me like I have lost my mind. I tell them to just google it. Soon as they do I hear a "Why didn't I think of this before!"
Oy!

Hold up your sock and keep the shirt in at the same time! It only works with pants though.
I do recall a rubber belt type of thingie in one of the military supply catalogs that wrapped over the shirt and under the pants, with a texture that was intended to adhere to both and keep everything in place; that might work for kilt wearers with the problem.

Why is it that people don't see things until it hits them with a brick????
My rogue wore his kilt when we went out to our friend's place. One of the first things out of one of their mouths were "You look like your wearing your wife's skirt!" He blew it off of them being stupid, but they were serious. With his panel shirt hanging over the kilt you couldnt' see the apron well so it looked like he was wearing my skirt.
Mortified he went in the bathroom and came out with his shirt neatly tucked in and you could see his nice belt and sporan. Later on other people were commenting on how much weight he had lost. The simple fact that he tucked his shirt in made him look taller, and slimmer to people.
When we got home he simply said "Please tell the board that they were right. Oh and could you make me another x-kilt? " /sigh oh well he did learn SOMETHING last night.

Question is answered. Sounds like experience is the best teacher.
