Why I wear the kilt

I don't wear the kilt; I wear kilts. Same as I don't wear the jeans, or the shorts.

Saying "the" kilt seems to inbue the garment with a certain mystical character, as if kilts were a form of clerical vestments.

It's wishful thinking, but I'd love to see kilts become the regular, everyday sort of garment they once were....

But isn't "the kilt" the appropriate plural for kilt?

For some of us, kilts are the regular everyday sort of garment they once were. I wear a suit to work, because my company has a dress code. I can't wear kilts, jeans, shorts or a sarong. When I'm not at work, usually, I'm in a kilt, light or heavy weight depending on the weather, formal or informal depending on what I'm doing. Why do I wear a kilt? For the same reason most men wear trousers. Because the law requires me to cover my lower half, and that is the way I choose to do it.

Woodsheal raises an interesting point. I usually refer to wearing "the kilt" myself. I suppose I do so largely because I am referring to more than just "a kilt". When I "saddle up" my horse for the day, I mean more than just a saddle . . . there is a bridle too, and a number of other items as well. When I say "the kilt" I am also meaning the hose, the sgian dubh, the belt, (if the kilt is to be worn without a jacket or waist coat) the kilt pin, and the sporran.

It is not meant to be mystical, merely inclusive of the accessories I usually wear whenever I put on a kilt.

What a grand idea! We shall begin referring to ourselves using the pluralis majestatis, since we do regard ourselves highly!

We are Jim Dunlop, and we wear the kilt because it well pleases us!
