alaskan,
" because if I really cared what people thought about how I was dressed, I wouldn't be putting on a kilt in the first place"
but then, why wear a kilt at all? what is the purpose if you don't care how you represent yourself? many may mistake you as a handsome lad, comfortable, confident and proud to be wrapped in the first and last manly garment.

I've seen a pipe band wearing matching ties with their kilts and I thought they looked fine, it didn't really seem like overkill to me.

I have the same problem with tartan hose. Combined with kilt and a tartan tie it's just, well, too much tartan.
I always thought that the best way to show off your kilt is to keep shirt, hose or socks, jacket etc as plain as possible. That way folk look at the important bit - the kilt.
Just my 2 penneth.

For me wearing a kilt isn't about how I represent myself to others. It's about how I represent myself to myself. I have pride in my herritage, and I think that men look good in kilts. I want to look good. Not to others, but to myself. My parents raised me in a way as to not care about what other people think, but at the same time not to offend.
