i have a "cut-throat razor" my grandfather gave me for x-mas last year
( it was actually HIS fathers razor till he got it )
the only problem is that I don't know how to sharpen it and I dont want to take the chance of jacking it up and I have yet to find a shop that will sharpen it for me so I can use it!!!
the absolute BEST shave I got was at a barber shop with a straight edge... he had the old machine to make the foam, did the towels on the face ect. ect. it lasted a good two weeks ( of course back then I only had to shave once a week....GOD I miss those days !!!)
anyhow ...as soon as I can get that puppy sharpened I am going to use it, and nothing else!
for those interested there are a few forums out there for straight edge razors that give advice, and what not
http://www.straightedgerazors.com/ is one that could be of some help
good stuff

I decided long ago that shaving is too much of a hassle and it only leaves me looking younger than I want to... now it's just a recognition thing with me...
Kevin who?
You know, the guy with the beard.
Gotcha.
Everyonce in a while I decide to try out a Van Dyke, goatee, soul patch or some other less hairy variety, and when I do was using a Schick triple bladed razor, but during my last experiment I grabbed one of the new 4 bladed razors (I think it's a Gillette), just cuz it had a single on the back to make trimming around the hair left behind easier...
Also a big *** on shampoo and conditioner for you guys with beards... It's definitely nice not to have a brillo pad on the face...

Norelco Electric Shaver for my neck (beard for the winter).
Otherwise a Mach 3 and canned shaving gel for special occasions.
The electric razor allows me to shave daily, with a blade I HAVE to wait every other day or it really rips up my tender skin.

I've done a lot of research on shaving for reasons I'll keep to myself for now. Anyhow... Gillette Mach 3 is the best on the market. Skip the four blade razors they are crap and will just irritate your skin due to being held in place by thin wires.
I never ever use shaving cream. It dries out the skin and can add to the irritation. I only use shaving oil. There are lots of shaving oils on the market. I use Pacific Shaving companies. Three drops is more than enough. You get a closer shave, softer skin and no rash or irritation at all. If I run out of oil before I have a new order, I will use hair conditioner as a substitute. Not as good but better than soap or cream.

Gillette fusion. Four blades means less passes, less passes means less irritation. I also try to shave every few days.. as an added bonus I look rugged and it keeps the wife away!

If I'm ever forced to shave again, I'll buy an electric. I just don't believe in putting a blade to my face.

Shaving and collecting old shave stuff is sort of a hobby for me. I shave my head and face with the same thing. Badger hair shaving brush, shaving mug with shaving soap (usually Crabtree & Evelyn for men - best in the world), and a Schick Extreme 3. Can't do the Mach 3. As much area as I have to cover, the Mach 3 is too small. And the Schick Extreme 3 flexes with the curves on my head.
Electric razor? No way! They'll never touch the smoothness of a "real" shave.

I have found that the best shave by far has been sitting in a barber chair and having the straight razor taken to my face, however as I do not do that often enough, I use the Gillete Fusion (thats the new 5 blade one) I just bought it because the Mach 3 refills were so much more, and for shaving cream/gel I have just found Neutrogena Men Razor Defense Shave Gel, I find there is no irritation or red marks no bumps just a good close shave. I will pick up more of this stuff when this one is finished.

I've found that if you shave while taking a hot shower, the steam helps reduce skin irritation.
