Scene 16

CountyJail

No opportunities presented themselves before nightfall, so I settled onto my cot to get what sleep I could.

Sometime during the night I was awoken by gunfire in the building. I quickly stepped to the door. “Hawk, Raven, get ready. Something’s happening.”

Over the next few minutes, more shots rang out in the building. Then I heard someone unlocking the door to the cellblock.

The door opened and I heard voices. “The file says he’s in Cell 4,” said a woman’s voice. “Go get him.”

Through the window of my door I saw a man’s head appear. “Step back from the door,” a familiar voice ordered. “We’re here to get you out.”

I stepped back from the door and heard it unlock.

The door swung open and the man was revealed. He was dressed all in dark clothing, with a camouflage patterned kilt and a black sweater and watch cap. He had a bandanna tied around his face, hiding his identity.

As he swung the door open, he began to speak. “Don’t worry, you’ve been rescued by the KLF …”

He never finished his statement. As he saw me, he froze. His eyes took on an expression of disbelief, or as if he had seen a ghost.

“Come on,” came the woman’s voice. “What’s taking so long? Let’s move.”

She stepped into the doorway to look at what her male companion was staring at. She was masked as he was.

Her eyes widened in shocked recognition when she saw me. “David?” she gasped.

I’m not sure what I expected, but it certainly wasn’t her next action.

She bolted across the floor and threw herself into my arms. With one hand she pulled down her mask and with the other she pulled my head down to hers, planting a kiss on me that was desperate in its intensity.

Wow, I didn't get a chance to keep up on this story while in Hotlanta. Things appear to be VERY interesting. Wondering who these two new characters are.

They're mostly independent, but there are references to earlier stories. There are also references to the stories from Panache and Pleater as well.

Scene 17

County Jail

Our kiss lasted for several long moments before the man snapped out of his shock. “Di, we don’t have time for this.”

I pushed her away from me. “He’s right,” I said to her. “We have to go.” I spoke to the man. “My two friends, in the other cells.”

“I’m on it,” he said. Something about his voice was familiar.

The woman, Diane, was still staring at me, her hand caressing my face. Looking at her, I realized who she was. To our organization back on our world she was known as SexyButler.

“I thought you were dead,” she said.

“I’ll explain later,” I promised. “We have to go.” I pulled her from the cell.

The man had released Ms. Hawk and was releasing Ms. Raven as I left my cell with Diane. As Ms. Raven stepped out the man asked me, “Is that everyone?”

“Yeah,” I answered. “Get us out of here.”

The man led us through the building towards the front.

“Our gear,” Ms. Raven protested.

“No time,” our rescuer declared.

“Make time,” I ordered and turned to Ms. Raven. “The DF unit, find it.”

“The what?” the man demanded.

“We need it,” was all I told him.

I looked around the jailhouse. Several deputies lie dead on the floor. I looked up at the man, who was waiting impatiently.

“It’s war,” was all he said to me.

“Got it,” Ms. Raven called from across the room. I noticed she had also grabbed the pack with the rest of her gear. Ms. Hawk had also grabbed something, the holster containing her favorite handgun.

“Good, can we go now?” the man asked impatiently.

“Lead the way,” I told him.

He led us through the front door of the building. Outside we encountered another masked, kilted man standing guard next to a running van. Someone sat in the driver’s seat, ready to take off.

“Inside,” the new man ordered. My associates jumped inside and I followed closely behind with Diane. As we settled ourselves on the floor of the vehicle, Diane snuggled up next to me, her eyes never leaving my face.

Our rescuer jumped into the front passenger seat while the other man climbed in after us, sliding the door shut behind him.

“Go,” ordered our rescuer.

The driver threw the van into gear and stomped on the gas pedal. The wheels of the vehicle squealed on the pavement as we pulled away from the jail.
