I would think that some yobo taunting a Coldstream guard wouldn't warrant closer scrutiny due to it happening so frequently.

Small point, I thought the newspaper article said he was a Scots Guard.

    [SARCASM]

Of course, it's not like the newspapers ever mess up any details regarding military matters!

I can't quite make out his buttons on the Vid, but I think he is either a Mick or a Taff (4 or 5 buttons) not a Gren (1) Coldcreamer (2) or Jock (3). Anyone else with the technology to view a freez frame see any better.

Having had a fresh look at his Bearskin there does not appear to be any hackle which would make him a Jock. Nemo Me Impune Lacessit. Nobody wound me with impunity. You'd think a man from Latin America would have understood the significance of that particular piece of Latin. Perhasp he does now. (''apologies to a former VP)

The 'Eathen in his idleness bows down to wood and stone,
'E don't obey no orders unless they is his own,
He keeps his side arms awful,
And he leaves them all about,
Until up comes the Regiment and kicks the 'Eathen out.

I thought I glimpsed two buttons could be wrong as I couldn't freeze it. I think that the Grenadier Guards are at St James Palace.

When I was oh, about 15 or 16 y/o, a couple of friends and myself were walking outside the Military Academy, and at the time they had armed (with real rifles and real bullets) sentries around the perimeter.

Well we walked past the last sentry and about 200-300 yards away one of my friends pretending to be funny and 'tough', turn around and takes mock aim at the sentry, you know, raise your arms and pretend to have a rifle or so.

Well, the laughs turned to sheer panic when we saw the sentry raise his REAL rifle, yell something and take aim at us.

I've never ran faster in my life.

That of course before I joined the military myself a few years later and had my own chances to payback at mocking lads.

    Patience has a limit.

Johny Gurkha wanged a couple of rounds off down Camberley High Street (Staff College entrance) in the late eighties at some one who failed to stop for a challenge. Must have been an indifferent soldier because he missed.

There is a line clearly drawn either by barrier or decorum for the occasion. Youth or stupidity ( they can be used interchangably) generally want to force the issue and move the line. They are also suprized when the reaction is negative. It has been the same every generation. A reminder is sometimes needed to reestablish that line. You may go up to the line but not cross. As I get older I sometimes wonder though if all thought process and conscience has left the youth of this planet. The young man in question may have only been on the line, perhaps getting more then he justly deserved because of previous incidents done by others. Regardless, This is a soldier who has a rifle with a bayonet and is trained in hand to hand combat. If you want to act the idiot then be prepared to pay the price. He is lucky the butt of the rifle was not sticking out one end the the bayonet the other. Question authority but respect the flag, the uniform, the occasion...

To bring this back to kilts and kilt type garments, decorum and common sense need to be used. I now get off the soap box and defer to others more knowledgeable.

    Regards,

Here's the Changing of the Guard Schedule for January. I'll let someone who knows more about the area figure out which unit he's in.

Can someone please educate this poor colonial? I'm not up on my British slang.

What the heck is a Mick? a Taff? a Gren? a Coldcreamer? a Jock?

I understood a total of 0/5 from those words.

This isn't a criticism but merely a general comment: when posting, do realize that there are XMTS members from all around the world who may not understand your local colloquialisms. Then, occasionally I see the odd post where I would have understood it better had it been written in Swahili. (HMm. Could've sworn it SOUNDED like English)...
