    Standard Kilt Item

    Don't care for:
    Ghillies
Animal face sporrans - remind me of road kill
Jackets with too much bling - copious silver buttons
    Lace cuffs and collars
    Tartan flat hats and tams
    White running shoes with tanks
    Tartan flashes
Replica uniforms in a non-uniform environment

I don't have a problem with the word "hate" here...

I HATE cheap, flimsy, awful crap sold by many vendors as kilt accessories.

Like Clan Crests and kilt pins. They bend with only a stern look, the plating quickly wears or flakes off, they lack a proper attachment and flop around, catching on anything available.

And thin, scrap leather kilt belts. Some of that stuff would be better for a trash can.

Also, buckles....I still have a lot of buckles that are non-kilt type and are by far better made than a $80 "kilt belt buckle", and they cost only a few dollars.

Not a fan of kilt pins either. I had one catch on a tailgate of my old pickup, nearly tearing the apron....I don't wear one much anymore since.

And a BIG one for me....useless, unsharpened, for-show-only Sgian Dubhs. If it's just for show..Why even bother? I carry a good, high quality knife everyday for the odd cutting task, why change that when I'm in a kilt? I don't own a dirk for the fact I can't find one that is actually useable with a resonable price.

The kilt, I believe, is a practical, utilitarian item of wear. We hold it in high esteem. Why diminish that with cheap junk accessories??

I don't truly hate anything about any Scots/Irish garb BUT I immensely dislike the elastic "garter" flashes that sometimes come with your kilt. I only wear garter ties as they are extremely comfortable all day long. The elastic kind cut into my leg and cut off the circulation. I also dislike ghillie brogues. When I tie on my shoes and boots, I like them laced tight. If I did the same thing with the brogues I'd be strapping them down like a tourniquette and my feet would fall off.

The thing I dislike most is probably the sporran, but then only because it is traditionally worn at the front and I don't like wearing it in that position. I wear mine only to look more formal, and otherwise wear my 'Sport Sporran', which is the Sport Kilt fanny pack, or if I am wearing my Sport Kilt it has the optional pockets and nothing else is needed.

I don't need flashes to keep my socks up, so I don't wear them, although I have nothing against them, and I would get some to wear if it was a formal event. I suspect it's all to do with the shape of your legs whether your socks stay up without.

As a young boy I had to wear shorts and long socks at school, and my socks were always falling down, but once a week at cub scouts I wore flashes to hold my socks up, because they were part of the cub scout uniform in that time and place. The flashes worked, but if they did come down they tended to get tangled. I wouldn't have dreamt of wearing my cub flashes with my school uniform, even if I did spend all day pulling my socks up, but if I had trouble now with kilt hose falling down I would wear a pair of flashes.

I think hate is too strong a word. I'm not a wearer of ghillie brouges, no hate for them, just not my thing.

I share your dislike of this look. However, I've seen people make it work! It's just not for me.

I can't think of anything I hate. Dislike - yes, usually for aesthetic purposes. Acrylic fur sporrans, for example - you look like you've skinned out a Muppet. I happen to like Muppets - friendly, inoffensive creatures for the most part, that have helped educate us and our children. Why would you wear one?
Or using plastic instead of real wood, leather, stones - that sort of thing.

    As for myself:
I don't wear ghillies, not because I don't like them, but because 1) they're a little too formal for an everyday shoe, and 2) given my long, narrow, flat feet finding a pair that's comfortable is next to impossible. I have a pair of plain black leather work shoes that I use - they may not be the dressiest, but they're comfortable.
I don't wear a kilt pin everyday, because I worry about catching it on something.
I don't wear garter ties or flashes everyday, because my hose stay up without them.

buckle brouges aren't my thing. Granted, I understand they go well with a montrose doublet and jabot type shirt....
I think it's because my own level of dress, is always very casual. When I look at day wear tweed it looks dressy to me, so the montrose with lace and buckled shoes is, over the top. To each his own though.

Both for price and looks, I would never wear a full animal mask sporran. And, for me, I wear the undiced Glengarry, since the Balmoral isn't my style. Hate? Closest I would come might be a worthless sgian dubh.
