As to the "modesty" thing--my pouch sporran (rob roy) does indeed fall right in the middle and that can be helpful as I sometimes wear a kilt while giving talks in people's homes, coffee shops, etc. and flashing the audience is not helpful. My semi-dress and SWK nylon sporrans are wider, stiffer, and they sit atop the legs--so no help there.
That being said...Cavebear58's photo collage changed my mind on this issue. I was going with the "kilts don't look right sans sporran" sentiments, but...I don't think the enemy were sitting in their trench, watching those Black Watch boys come screaming with their bayonets, and thinking "Those Scots don't look masculine without their sporrans, do they?" All the proud men in uniform exemplify true kilted attitude--so now I have to say kilts without sporrans look fine.

As if this thread needed one more response...
I always wear a sporran when kilted.
It holds everything i need when out and about. I hang my sunglasses on the chain at my hip.
By the way, I kind of like the bouncing of the sporran when I walk.

I only wear traditional kilts and always wear my sporran when out. I do take it off at home though. Utilikilts and their competitors have pockets and look fine without a sporran. IMHO.

Indeed not. In fact, even if they DID think that, it would be all the more reason to fear them. Female soldiers have historically been among the most fearsome warrior. In Africa, among the Fon people, the ahosi or "wives of the king" were an elite fighting force consisting entirely of women... And you would not want to mess with them. In fact, these women would have a slave girl walk in front of them ringing a bell, warning people to avert their eyes lest they gaze upon them and be slaughtered. Yikes!
In addition, there were numerous women who fought in the Jacobite uprisings, and during various times in Scotland's history women have taken up arms alongside the men.
On July 22, 1861, Mary Walker become the only woman to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor at Bull Run.
In WWI and WWII, women also fought -- they just aren't talked about very often, and they were often from other countries.
Sorry, this is off-topic but I thought it would be interesting to mention... I found an awesome website on this though... http://www.lothene.demon.co.uk/others/women.html
Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled programming...

At home we wear our kilt with our without sporran all the time. Besides, it appears you're in America so you can wear anything, anyway you want! I don't like to wear it while I'm working.

Im not bragging
With my SWK thrifty, you need a sporran for modesty WHILE STANDING. Or you get a "bump" in the apron. Especially in a headwind!

And some of us need horsehair sporrans for exactly this reason...
... think about it.

you sure could do it. I just prefer a kilt with a sporran.
If you find the sporran uncomfortable, you might also consider wearing it on the hip where it bothers you less, but where you can still have something to leave your belongings.
