I like MUGs. In 1980, when on Bali, I bought some sarongs, and wore these there and, later on, during summers at home. In The Netherlands there were no kilts to buy in these years, so when we were in Scotland in 1994, I bought my first kilt. After my retirement I started to wear my kilt, and bought UK's, Breacan's (Kinloch Anderson), and the real ones. Having no Scots roots, I stick to district tartans, cities, companies. Since 2002 full time kilt wearer.
So, why? Because I like it!

Why
Back in 1987, the Cleveland Police Memorial Society started a pipe band, being Irish and scottish, of course I joined. We used the Kennedy tartan in Memory of JFK. The band broke up but I still had the kilt. I wore it at Christmas and New Years, Thanksgiving etc. , mainly because I REALLY liked it. Then I hung it in that "shrinking closet " that everyone seems to have. Then in 2004 I found SWK on the internet. BAM ! A USMC heavy weight. I hung it in the " growing closet " so my son took it over (also a USMC vet ) that led to a Utilikilt for each of us and another USMC standard for me. I retired in Jan 2009, and now it's a solid black, Confederate Memorial, and a Law enforcement, an Argyle Jacket, a rabbit fur sporran I made myself ( because my off-duty wouldn't fit in a horse hair sporran ) and a couple of other sporrans for variety. Now I'm wearing kilts almost full time. The addiction grows........

I have always liked kilts... I first wore one to my First Communion which I liked being a bit different. I decided to purchase one around 6 months ago because I:
-continued to like them
-thought it was a nice representation of Scottish identity
-felt very much associated with my country's & clan's roots and wanted to identify with these
I'm starting to wear my kilts much more regularly as I enjoy celebrating Scottishness within daily activities. Scottish-themed events and political meetings are mainly when I wear them but I'm going kilted to my next 3 vacations around Scotland which should be fun!
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

My girlfriend turned me. Then I turned her (into my wife).

A guy wearing a kilt shopping was shopping in the grocery store my wife used to work in. As soon as she got home she told me about how good it looked on him, and said "you ought to try it" with a come hither look in her eyes.
Of course it took much arm twisting and begging for me to agree to it NOT TRUE! -- I agreed to give it a go wholeheartedly!
Within a week I welcomed her home from work attired in my newly acquired kilt (SWK).
Cheers
Tony
