How bout a charcoal sock with bright red or dark green garters? Or a dark green sock with red flashes. I am fairly solidly in the "no black hose unless you cut yourself too" camp, and white hose are just for making yourself visible from space, or looking like Klaus Nomi in a kilt, if you wear a black kilt with white hose, black shoes, white shirt, black tie, black flashes, you get the idea. Shave everything a couple inches back from your forehead, spike what's left, and hit all the high notes.
Don't get tartan flashes...too matchy matchy.
Some argyle socks would look awesome with Black Watch tartan. Black hose with red flashes under a dark kilt with a PC is just gonna look too...I dunno, "high school"...look at me, I wear black clothing, I am a broodily brooding dark anguished artistic soul, etc...they can look good, but don't overdo the black! There were no Scottish ninjas!
...spoken with tongue firmly planted in cheek. If you had a saffron kilt, or something with a similar base, black hose could look awesome.

IMO black kilt hose* are sexy They have the tall dark stranger appeal.
*As long as they're the thicker kind, not the $5 on ebay kind

Hm, all things to think about for sure. Green is what I'm leaning toward at this point.

A note on kilt hose- native Scots are baffled at our "everything must match" mindset. However, I have found that a well-chosen hose color can really bring out the "sparkle" in a tartan. I like to wear forest green with my Colorado state tartan kilt because the bright green of the socks really makes the tartan pop- and it's a very colorful tartan already! So just something to think about- carefully chosen hose can really make an outfit, at least to American sensibilities. And screw the whole "no tartan flashes" thing- they can look great. Wildrover has no fashion sense anyway! ***wink wink nudge nudge***

I have a black Utilikilt (getting a traditiona kilt this summer). I wear black hose, black flashers, black boots and quite often a black shirt. Unfortuantly, black looks the best on me. point is, black hose look good, but I agree, they need to "match." By match it really needs to mak the kilt "pop." Green would bring out the green in the black watch, while black hose would proabally mute the green.
*Note* I do not claim to be knowledgable on fashion.
Found this on the lasses wear thread. Post number 73, with the black watch and black dress.

Not bad in my eyes.
