I was in one of the glasgow kilt shops today getting a pair of kilt hose and I mentioned to the man that served me that we were having this discussion on x marks, he agreed that something has to be done about the state some of the kilts c ome back from hire. I suggested that his boss should look on this forum for some of the ideas that have been suggested, he did say that the main problem is that they cannot guarantee that if they supplied an underskirt or briefs with every kilt that was hired that these would be worn, there is no way that this could enforced. I suggested that perhaps a tariff on returning the kilt in a poor condition could be imposed.

Here in the States -- and I imagine elsewhere -- when you hire a car, someone from the rental agency looks over it with you, carrying a checklist and ticking off various things concerning its condition before you drive away in it. When you return the vehicle, it's inspected again to see if there's any damage, scuffs, etc. not already noted on the checklist. If there are, you'll be paying more for the rental than you originally anticipated.
Seems to me something similar could be done regarding thread snags, worn spots, fabric tears, stains, etc. on a hired kilt.

I seem to recall something along those lines on the tux rental when I went to prom in HS. I fail to see how a kilt hire should be much different.

Be sure to wash it first before you decide on length. They do (as noted in the description) shrink some.

Totally brilliant article, it wouldn't be a Greenock wedding party without a stramash, it would make everybody's day.
But on a more serious not this is what the kilt hirers have to contend with especially so when some of these kilt wearers get rat-arsed and no personal hygiene is practiced. At least an underskirt or briefs would reduce the consequences

Wasn't that article on another thread and exposed as a spoof?
One thing about long shirts - sometimes when I go to sit down they hang up at the waistline from friction and don't "expand" around my tail end. Any experience with that?
I often wear river shirts/fishing shirts with my kilts - their long tails help some, but I have come to prefer underkilts after much trial and error with the different options.

This should be a sticky.
For personal hygiene and for the rest of us, especially since washing the kilt is painful.

I'm sure washing the kilt must shorten its life

Re: New idea for underkilt
Over the last couple of weeks we have had high winds over most of Scotland and the forecast is for more of the same over the next few days. I wore the kilt on Saturday night it was fairly blowy and miserable but I found that wearing an underskirt of lycra which I was able to buy from LIDL sometime ago helped to support the kilt in this windy weather, the wind just did not seem to catch the kilt as much as usual. Has any other members found this as a partial solution to the kilt blowing up in windy weather?
