I doubt that. It sounds like just another of the many myths that Americans love to tell each other about Scotland..
neloon, what makes you so sure that the quote came from an American? We have many members here that are non-American but speak excellent English. As an American I find your statement offensive.

Indeed, Mike is from South Africa. Sorry you are offended.

Neloon.
To be fair, I think Scotland should bare a large proportion of the responsibility for this myth perpetuation. There are many examples within the ranks of our artists and our authors, plus the largest culprit of all, the Scottish tourist industry itself, who have ruthlessly peddled this rubbish.

Actually, loving the quote, the answer ( ) is "no."
The reference in Biblical times was to a fairly wide cloth tied firmly in such a manner as to protect one's personal plumbing and appertenances thereto from painfully flopping about during strenuous exercise or activity such as running or battle. The cloth had nothing to do with personal hygiene, for which there were many rules and procedures to which men adhered strictly, but merely comfort and safety.
For those with smaller equipment of course there is no danger of injury from excess motion.
(Oo-o-o-o-oh! I'm going to hear about it now!)

Totally agree, Jock. Trouble is, we know it's rubbish but they don't and they keep on peddling it around as though it were truth because various US gurus tell them it is. So often on this site, we Scots try to staighten things out and it is just not accepted - presumably "not in America's interests".

Do you think they just want an excuse to go about without underwear and we Scots get the blame of it? A little frisson of excitement perhaps at the thought of their naughtiness under the kilt? Mr Oettle obviously believes everything he reads here if what he says about some Colonel or other is true. Just a shame he is so quick to criticise my post about moth damage. I wonder if he is one of those 'commandos' keen to (accidentally of course, wink, wink) expose himself and then justify it with spurious tales about 'real Scotsmen'.

Who knows, Phil. Maybe we should explain to them the proper way to play baseball. And how it was invented by the Chief of Clan Philowitz after the Battle of Glen Troozoff in 1127.

Sorry - didn't realise it was Freud who invented baseball.
