From Electronic Scotland and the Clan MacBeth Society of North America:
    Motto: Conjuncta virtuti fortuna.
    Translation: Fortune joined to bravery.

As for me, the Robertsons and MacDonalds have already been mentioned, so:
    Stewart - "Virescit vulnere virtus"
"Courage grows strong at a wound."

And Sackett - "Aut nunquam tentés, aut perfice."
"Do or do not, there is no try." (Not an exact translation, I know, but it expresses the meaning in a culturely familiar way. )

The MacDonald motto, " Per Mare Per Terras", has already been mentioned. This motto is shared by the MacDonald's of MacDonald, of Sleat, and of Keppoch. What is less well known is that there are other branches of Clan Donald that have other mottoes. For example, my family (from Islay) is a sept of Clan Donald South with the motto "Toujours Prest", roughly translating as "Always Ready". Others include MacDonald of Glengarry, "Creag an Fhitich"-"the Raven's Rock" and MacDonald of Clan Ranald's, "My Hope Is Constant in Thee". The MacDonalds of Ardnamurchan use "In Hope I Byde". The MacDonalds of Glencoe's motto is "Cuimhnich". I'm not quite sure what that means, perhaps someone out there could offer a proper translation.

I should have taken the time to look that up, it's quite fitting-and a bit haunting as well.

Clan Douglas: Jamais arriere. Never behind. Which is somewhat ironic, seeing as how the Douglas enemies were fond of warning each other "Look out! Behind you!" Of course, at that point, to late. The boogyman had come and got them.

Clan MacLennan: Dum spiro spero. While I breath I hope. A good personal reminder for me.
