I have a VanDyke, but I keep my cheeks and neck clean with an electric razor.
For years, when I was young and broke (now I'm older and a little less broke) I could not use an electric. My beard stubble always broke down the screens, dulled the blades, and generally made them unusuable in two weeks or less.
During that time I used a Gillete Sensor Excel, but I shaved right after the shower and did not use foam or cream of any sort. Of course, my skin was tough enough I could dry shave, except that dulled the blade in a single shave.
Now I use an electric, sorry cant remember the brand but for the first time I spent a decent amount of money on it. Get an electric in the $100.00 range and you should get good results.
Still, the absolutely BEST shave is when I have my barber Tony do the whole works. Hot towels, hot cream, and a straight razor, with some Bay Rum aftershave... wonderful.

Shave after a shower....check
Skin tough enough to dry shave....check
A barber around here with the skills (or confidence) to shave with a straight razor.....nope
My fiance bought me a "shave" for Valentine's Day at her hair salon (yes, salon should have been a clue), where "they have a real old-fashioned barber chair." After getting there, I should have known what I was in for after they put some kind of mask over my eyes. Next thing I knew, they put hot wax on my eyebrows. I thought about bailing right then, but only one way to get that stuff off, so I had to stay. Then out comes the can of shave gel and a mach 3. What a rip off. And apparently she had never shaved anything. I think I lost 2 layers of skin. I didn't have a whisker for 2 days....couldn't have shaved anyway with all the razor burn she gave me!

Not as good but better than soap or cream.
I've used hair conditioner and love it on my legs. I've also heard stories of people using ...er..uhm....."personal" lubricants such as KY to shave with.

I get great results with a Mach 3 and the shaving soap from The Body Shop applied with brush. This combo will mow through four days of growth with no trouble.

Haven't done much shaving for awhile, http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...11/PorPost.jpg, but when I did I always fared best with a straight razor. Only thing I didn't cut myself with. I even managed to nick myself enough to draw blood with an electric shaver. I think the lethal potential of an open blade tends to keep me more focused.
I still do a bit of trimming. I chop the beard back 3 or 4 inches right after Christmas, and again in early May. When I do that I sharpen up the old cutthroat for trimming the edges and dressing things up. I lather up with Colgate shaving soap, and an old boar bristle shaving brush.
All skill and effort is to no avail when an angel pees down your drones.

Guys, I shaved my head for four years. I got to learn a lot about how to shave safely and without irritation. As suggested, the Gillette Mach 3 is the ONLY razor to use.
Foams, soaps, and even lotions will not do as good of a job as what I"m going to suggest. They can also dry your skin, cause more irritation or clog pores.

the Pacific Shaving company offers an all natural shaving oil. Two drops is all you need. My skin was always healthy and in four years I nicked myself once.

Just a little friendly opposition from a fellow headshaver . While pacific shaving oil is good, I couldn't get near the results I get with a quality block of shaving soap and a brush. Plus its hard to tell where you've shave. But mix the two methods, rub on the shave oil, then lather up on top, is incredible...of course freshly out of the shower.
Mach 3 just takes too long, it's too narrow. Best blades though. If they flexed with my skull and were a little wider, I would've used one today. Still wish I could find somebody to teach me the art of the straight razor. A real trick would be to learn to use it on my head !

I just use a mach3 and some gillete shaving cream. Does me pretty good, though my whiskers all grow in different directions so thats a pain. I usually leave myself a "chin-strap". My great-grandma is the only person who doesn't give me crap about it. She says it makes me look like a Scot, heheh.
