    Woah ...

I thought a jimmy hat was what stopped the "special hug" from working.

A little off-topic, but I wear my Ravenclaw gear year-round. Some of it looks mighty fine with a kilt, for that matter. 8)

I wish it were in my travel plans. I remember the times we made port there, it seemed like a fine place... I'd love to go trap around Balboa park -- kilted, of course.

And with that, I'll whole-heartedly agree. And I'll repeat what someone else said -- the kilt is subject to individual interpretation. Wear it, don't wear it, whatever makes you happy.

As a side note, a couple of years ago, I wore a kilt with a jacobean shirt on halloween, and my then-girlfriend asked, "What, you're dressing as yourself for Hallows?" It was one of the gateways to my wearing the kilt on a frequent basis.

Okay, I'm from Texas. There are some people around here that wear cowboy boots, denim jeans and a stetson to play cowboy for Halloween, but I've never heard of anyone getting offended just because some of us wear those same things as everyday wear.

    Costume or not?

An interesting debate that once and again tells me, how difficult communication really is. What is a costume?
To me (and most Europeans, I think) the term costume is used for a garment or garments intended for special occasions and the word is neutral loaded.
That will cover celebrations like weddings (white or black tie functions) as well as Halloween etc. Further it comprises what we describe as “national dress” or “national costume” (sorry).

Bear (Bear Kilts) used to have a pay off like “A kilt is a garment and not a costume”. What did he mean by that?
To me it always said that if a kilt is worn as a substitute to pants = trousers it is a garment; if it is used for weddings or the like (only) it is a costume (or part of a costume – full highland wear).

Most of you seem to have another idea of a costume. Some of you have even said that calling a kilt a “costume” would be an insult to a Scotsman – even if many, if not most Scotsmen probably wear their kilts as seldom as I wear “white tie”.
I won’t argue with you about definitions – English is not my mother tongue – but I realize how easy it is to insult someone without wanting to – just because of differences in the interpretation of terms such as “a costume”.

GG - A non-Scot who will wear his kilt as a garment.

If someone can dress as a Cowboy, an Indian, a Bantu Warrior, or even a Nun, why not as a Scotsman? Sounds fine to me.

Yikes! What a tread I've just trod through. Read all them posts. Still no answer in my mind yet...kind of a slow poke. I do know that for me, I won't be kilted on Halloween. But I will be for our local Pumpkin Festival the Saturday before.

This long discussion does remind me of that beer commercial where an aging Burt Reynolds and some other guys sit around a table trying to hash out "Man Rules."

The great Afgan scholar Rumi said something to the effect of, "Out beyond ideas of right-doing and wrong-doing there is a field. I'll meet you there."

Ok,I am sorry if I have ruffled a few feathers ,but on reading the threads here, I wonder if my idea of costume is the same as yours?

My definition of Highland attire is:-Normal day/evening wear that people wear, with the kilt, as a matter of course, should they choose to do so.Uniforms, military or civilian, worn with the kilt are uniforms first and Highland attire second and are not considered as "costume".

Costume:-This covers anything that is worn by actors/re-enactment fans/Halloween participents etc.etc.Their clothing is worn for the effect that they are trying to achieve and has absolutely nothing to do with Highland attire.

Well, we may not agree even now and I conceed that it is all down to personal interpretation and choice.

Perhaps we should meet in "Riverkilt's field" that he so wisely talked about. If we do,mine's a large Talisker!
