I was spotted as an American in Australia, once because I was carrying too much stuff in my pockets (apparently an American or at least tourist trait), and once because I was wearing a university class ring, not the custom there. Sharp as Sherlock Holmes, those Aussies.

    Congratulations.

I used to live next to Arizona State Univercity because I worked and attended courses there. One day when I was walking home, a kid on a bicycle road by, and yelled back over his shoulder at some people from India walking behind me, "go back where you came from!" The people didn't respond to the guy and really only said a couple of words to each other. I turned around and shrugged my shoulders, and we all just kept walking.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

I was walking with my ex-girlfriend once, who was adopted from Korea, and had that happen. She yelled back "To Long Island??"

Until I was sixteen, I lived in New Mexico. When I would tell people, outside of the SouthWest, I am from New Mexico nine times out of ten they would say something like "Oh! You're from Mexico, welcom to America..." Um, ya.

I find it funny that some in Texas ask where I am from, and I reply Texas, then I am asked where was I born... I reply England, Suffolk County...then I get called a Yankee ... I am used to it but it still dumbfounds me...
