My personal preference for Black Watch would be pleated to sett as I think the dark colors (mine is actually fairly bright for BW tartan) are going to blur into each other. As Glen notes though, it is your choice. I would ask your kilt maker's advice and if you are really keen on having it pleated to stripe see if your kilt maker can do a quick mock up and send you a photo so you get an idea of what it looks like.

Greetings Gentlemen,
Made the trip up to Burnett's & Struth today to have a look in person & make sure all the measurements were done right the first time.
I just placed my order with Margaret at B&S; 16oz Strome, hand-sewn Black Watch. My grandfather was PM, 2nd Battalion, 173rd Can.Hldrs who folded into the A&S Hldrs after the war, so I believe there is a connection of sorts for that tartan? My wife loves it anyhow... Surprisingly, when I talked to Margaret about the pleating, she had strong feelings for to the (black)stripe & showed me an example of what she meant. OK, we’ll see if it lives up to it’s billing in 8 weeks time! And again, many thanks for the gallery of 'looks' that have inspired me.
regards,
Maceairsidh

An excellent visual reference!
the comment on having one good kilt and spend the rest on accessories and jackets is good advice for this newbie. Best work toward dress for all occasions and then ponder another kilt or more.

Very cool. I don't normally like royal Stewart but you wear it well. Nice choice of colors to compliment.

Very good photos. If I could make a little suggestion and please do not take this the wrong way.
If you have the top of your hose two fingers width below the knee and a three inch turn down on the hose, it would be a complete 5 star!
Hope you don't mind me making a suggestion, if so I apologize.

I posted this in another thread that linked to this thread, but wanted to leave it here as well.
Seriously thank you for making this post. This thread is THE reason I am looking into getting a tartan kilt. Love the versatility presented and I look forward to playing with options for different levels as the occasions present themselves.

Glad to hear that, this really is the reason we did the thread in the first place. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.
