    A note from the Moderators

    Chas and Graham,

It behooves our members to be responsible and know the knife laws in their area if they are going to wear or carry the sgian dubh, the dirk, a claymore, a lochaber axe or other such kit with their highland attire.

However our forum is not the place to discuss how to interpret or debate these local laws

If you wish to continue to do so, please take it to PM

    Cheers

    Jamie

Chas, thanks for your posting and Jamie, thanks for bringing this back on track.

Not withstanding any personal opinions, pro or con, regarding the wearing of sgians dubh and dirks with Highland attire the following guide lines apply:

    (1) Civilian day wear: only the sgian dubh is worn.
    (2) Civilian evening wear (jacket and tie): only the sgian dubh is worn.
    (3) Civilian formal evening wear (black tie, with or without decorations): only the sgian dubh is worn.
    (4) Civilian full dress evening wear (white tie, with decorations): the sgian dubh is worn; wearing the dirk is optional.

Those individuals in uniform, either civilian or military, should follow the regulations of the organization to which they belong. They should wear, or carry, only such items as may be authorized for wear with their uniform. Items not authorized should not be worn.

The wearing of a sgian dubh or dirk is, for civilians, a matter of personal choice and should not be challenged or debated by those who choose not to wear them.

I think the question is answered.
