neloon, what is this hatred you have for America?
"we Scots try to staighten things out and it is just not accepted - presumably "not in America's interests".
"Maybe we should explain to them the proper way to play baseball. And how it was invented by the Chief of Clan Philowitz after the Battle of Glen Troozoff in 1127"

I don't - I really don't. I have many lovely American friends and great respect for several US contributors to this site. But you remind me of a Senator (?) who asked after the dreadful 9/11 atrocity "Why do they hate us so much?" I think it's actually a kind of sad despair. I guess you have to be a non-American to understand. Britain used to rule the waves and WE used to get the flack. For just now, it's your turn. One day, maybe, we can all "brithers be".

I am sure none of us kilt wearers here in Scotland have any hatred for America.
As a kilt wearer in Scotland I would consider it only common sense to wear underwear, for decency, for comfort and for keeping the kilt clean, and so I find it rather alien to my own culture that some kilt wearers from America or South Africa or wherever like to publicise on an internet forum that they wear their kilts without underwear and try to justify this as a Scottish tradition.
Edited to add:- Yes I am aware that in historic times soldiers, or for that matter anyone else, did not wear underwear. The fact that the military were slow to adopt underwear gave rise to the term regimental or going commando but I fail to see the need to connect historic military tradition with the wearing of kilts by civilians in modern society.

This thread is veering toward a national-rivalry direction and seems to be close to violating some forum rules. Let's not get back to the infamous "Scottish Outlook On Kilted Americans" thread. Americans just get angry because they don't like what th others have to say, everyone else takes pot shots and pretends that it was all in the spirit of jockularity.
Let's just nip it in the bud before it starts.

Wow - how did we suddenly get to hating each other? Can we just nip it in the bud as TheOfficialBren suggests as it has nothing to do with the original question. Can I just say, however, that this "over-sensitivity" is nothing new for sailortats and he really should try to develop a more mature attitude to such postings here, none of which are designed to offend, more in the spirit of encouraging a healthy discussion.

Easy, folks, or the Mods will have to either close this thread or ask me to place a curse on it!

(Darnit ... typed up a big spiel and posted but it asked to sign in and I somehow lost the whole thing so here's the short version)
--------------------------------------------------
All you can do is do what you want... whatever you do, you will always be doing something someone else objects to.
Kilts should be about freedom to do what *you*want regardless of what some group thinks (regardless of whether the group is the anti-underwear or pro-underwear camp : if we wanted to follow what 'the group' thinks, we'd just always wear pants). So if some want to wear underwear (perhaps offering more 'mental comfort' of not accidentally flashing a bus load of children during an unfortunately timed updraft of breeze) they should be free to do so and if some don't want to wear underwear (because they feel it is more physically comfortable), they should be free to do so (as long as they understand they may break some imposed law of society given certain 'uplifting' wind conditions)
